The problem with 1. is the definition of "earned" citizenship. As it is, there are a lot of people on waiting lists to enter the country legally. The current policies are a slap in the face to all the legal immigrants. How can one "earn" citizenship when the person got in the country by committing a crime in the first place. Just some food for thought there.

The problem with 2 is militarization. Border security should be handled by people who are actually trained in the field, not soldiers who are trained in anything from artillery to infantry or maintenance or who knows what. They don't have the expertise to effectively deal with people who are not combatants.

Both. The problem is complex and will require a great deal of regard to legality issues.
Here is a quick concept to mull.
There are in excess of twelve million illegal immigrants in the US and that number is growing daily. We have to have a day when the flow is stopped. That will require some action as in number 2.
Then we need to process the people that are here already without causing civil unrest. That will require parts of number 1. It cannot continue unchecked because the infrastructure of the US cannot handle it. We will become a mess just like Mexico City. We must come up with a plan to integrate the immigrants who came here illegally, but we cannot turn our backs on the ones that followed the law and came here legally. A crime was committed and their has to be a penalty. The border must be secured and the employers need to be investigated and fined/jailed if they hire undocumented persons. When the source of jobs dries up, we need to have a system in place to convert undocumented into guest workers. Its going to be a lot of hard work and I am sure that it will be easier to ignore the problem, but this country does not have the infrastructure to host Mexico's indigent population.

I think ALL illegals should be DEPORTED!!! NO exceptions! Anyone who has EVER sneaked into this country, should NEVER be allowed citizenship!!! Our borders (BOTH of them) should be secured by whatever means neccessary!!!!!
Then, make it easier for the foreigners who have obeyed our laws by WAITING, to come here!! Although, there needs to be a LIMIT set on how many can come from each country!

The second one is the only one that will work. We allowed on amnesty under Ronald Reagan (one of the few things i think he was totally wrong about) and all that did was cause more folks to sneak in.

We need to punish those who do not respect our laws. Jail at hard labor and deportation after that, for those criminals who come here illegally.

I would have to say #2 if these are my only choices I am way past compassion in this disastrous situation. I think it is time we start having compassion for the American taxpayer who is getting the screwed every which way.
Today is as good as this country will ever be again. That you can take to bank!

I'll take answer #2 for 600, please...the Border Patrol needs to do their job, the ICE/INS/whatever needs to do its' job, I don't support segregation, I support keeping the damn border closed to people trying to enter through it illegally, and sanctioning against US employers that hire illegal workers.

First, secure the borders

Second, Crack down on employers who hire illegals

Third, Deport Illegals as we find them. No exceptions. If they are not legal than they do not belong here.

I agree with "yes its me" here: I don't go for the 2 solutions you set out in your question. It will take border patrol security (from #1) and deportation (from #2) and then add in severely penalizing employers of illegals. Remove the anchor baby incentive. Remove all and any social services access for illegals, including welfare, medical (unless they pay for what they use), and use of the education system. Charge and prosecute any who use stolen/fake SSNs or any other fake ID. Charge anyone who drives without a license/insurance. Anyone who has committed a further crime after illegally crossing the border should be documented by the authorities (fingerprinted, recorded) and then deported with no future chance of returning to the USA again ever. Any illegal who comes forward and voluntarily deports themselves on their own steam, give them slightly favoured consideration if they return to their own country and apply through the proper channels for a temporary guest worker card to return (themselves only) to the USA to work (no family members) and as long as they report back to the INS authorities as required and leave when their stint ends. Any overstays to be severely dealt with and deported with no chance of return ever again. Let them come back in as registered/documented temporary guest workers, only, and paying full share of income taxes (no fraudulent declaration of dependents). In fact, a set amount of income taxes should be paid by all guest workers, with no consideration for dependents.

I'm sorry but I don't think compassion should come into this. The USA has been compassionate enough to lawbreaking illegal immigrants and all that has done is encourage them to take advantage of that compassion and try to take more and more. Any compassion here needs to be directed towards legal immigrants and citizens of the USA.

Illegal immigrants need to show compassion and gratefulness to the great country of the USA for allowing them to come here to work and make a better life for their families back home in their own country. Illegal immigrants and their families need to be encouraged to work hard to make necessary changes in their own countries so that there won't be this overwhelming need and desire to leave their countries to live decently. Citizens of the USA will be more than happy to show support to immigrants in this endeavour and do everything they can to back them up in making demands and changes in their own countries. In fact, citizens of the USA would be proud to do so, because they are such a generous, supportive people.

Current illegal immigrants need to show compassion and respect to the citizens of the USA and legal immigrants and stop leaching off of them and taking advantage of their kindness and generosity. Show respect for the laws of the land, at least learn basic English, and stop demanding rights in the USA and instead demand them at home.

Put a fence on the border, secure it up, and take them all out of the country, otherwise they will never be US citizens!

i support a strong border, no one here illegally, if they are charge with a felony, if an employer using illegals, a heafty fine. no babies born to illegals on american soil become automatic citizens..

there is a process in place to get legal citizenship..use it. they are draining our money, ruining our schools and other structures..
