What's the basis for Brown's views on Mary Magdalene and her competition with Peter?

Are Mary Magdalene's bones buried within the glass pyramid structure at the Louvre, as Brown presents it at the end of his novel?

There are a number of interesting issues raised by the DaVinci Code.

One claim is that a group of people called the Priory of Sion has been protecting the bloodline of Jesus since 1099. This claim is not true. The Priory of Sion was in fact created in 1956 by Pierre Plantard. Obviously, DaVinci could never have been a grandmaster of this group since it did not exist during his lifetime.

Another claim is that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and had a child and a bloodline. There is very little reliable evidence that this ever happened. The evidence cited in the DaVinci code comes from the Gospel of Philip. It is believed to have been written in the second century or later (180-350). This is more than 100 years after the life of Jesus, and most believe it was created too late to be accurate.

Think of it this way. If I went out and wrote a book on the US Civil War (1861-1865) and told you everything you had read previously was wrong - it was the south's idea that slavery should be abolished and that the south won the war. Would you believe me? You wouldn't believe me because I could not possibly have first hand knowledge. The writer of the Gospel of Philip had no first hand knowledge either.

The book also claims that Mary Magdalene is to the left of Jesus in the DaVinci's "Last Supper" rather than John. The vast majority of art historians reject this claim. See the wikipedia site below for more information on this if you wish. It is John in the painting and there is likely no code either. Even if you suppose there is a code, what does DaVinci know about Christ? He did not belong to a Priory of Sion, because it did not exist. Also, remember that he lived 1400-1500 years after Christ.

The DaVinci Code is a fictional writing, and should be treated as such. Keep asking questions, and keep trying to find answers. :-)

All these questions were answered on a series of shows on History Channel. I've seen them shown several times. The DaVinci Code is completely fictional. It has no basis in reality. Someone made up this stuff and mixed it with enough history that people who don't know the history can't separate fact from fiction. Luckily these questions have been asked and answered already. Seriously, I was just as curious and History channel answered them all and then some. One show is just about the history of the Knights Templar, one about the Priory, and the Opus Dei. There is a show about all the "proof" given by the book, it goes into detailed research about the painting, the "rose line", everything. Also there are shows about who Mary Magdalene really could have been based on history. They think that because Mary was such a common name that Mary Magdalene may be a conglomerate of many different Marys. Really, the DaVinci Code, to me, comes down to pushing the envelope for what is assumed about religion, and trying to stretch the truth to accomodate that "what if".

This is a piece of fictional work!!! If you've read the prologue to the book it states it so there!!! The author just linked a bunch of information and others' beliefs together to make a piece of fiction...that is very good by the way!

1. Jesus could've very well been married. (History Channel's documentary). Men at the time were usually married and didn't live in either celibacy or single lives. We don't know if he was married to Mary Magdalene but the bible does state that he kissed her many times on the lips. But as my hubby says..."do you really think Jesus could've been married to someone who was possessed by like 40 demons?" Religious works also state that she had as many as 30 some demons exorcised out of her.

2. The holy grail being the sacred feminine is something we don't know, that's a huge jump the author is making when connecting those two.

3. The Priory of Sion is not a real group at all. (History Channel Documentary.) In fact the author of the work was put in jail for perjury and later admitted to having made the entire thing up.

4. Mary Magdalene, according to scripture was a prostitute, about to be stoned, when she met Jesus. She washed his feet with perfume and oil, and scrubbed them with her own hair. She also had demons expelled from her.

5. Dan Brown is the author of the Davinci Code. He is also currently being sued by authors of other works...he copied their works to make his own...that's illegal.

6. I don't believe Mary Magdalene's bones are buried within the Louvre.

No one has the answers. It's just theories. There is no proof one way or the other.

The Priory of Sion was finally proven to be a real organization several hundred years ago. In the 50s, some guy tried to pretend he was the blood line of the Priory of Sion and he was full of crap, but it was an actual organization that came from the Knights Templar.

The Da Vinci Code is a fiction novel- it's not true in any aspect, but it does have interesting points (that's all I'll give it). If you want the truth about Jesus' life, read the Bible- it's got all the information you need.

The 8th word from the end of your question answers it. This is a novel -- a work of fiction, and, from what I have heard of it, a mediocre one at that. It was never intended to be a history book or a Gospel. It tells the story of Christ as well as "Tom Sawyer" tells the story of life on the Mississippi in the 18th century, as well as "1984" explains life in America in the mid-80's, or as well as "Star Trek" describes what life will be like in the 24th century.

It is false and it tries to disprove the divinity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It was written by agnostics and they combine Biblical and non Biblical to point to something that is not true - the favourite deception of the devil i believe is mixing truth with error so as to captivate and decieve more people. Follow the Bible and the Bible only and it says that he didn't have wife or any sexual relations with any female. He was from a virgin birth and remained pure just as lamb so that he could properly represent us. Just like the animal sacrifices before they had to choose a lamp that was without spot or blemish - so Jesus was with spot or blemish. A lamb doesn't have sex he is too young and pure. Jesus represented that.
