Folks who are "hard-core" religious are so because it's comfortable for them. Sometimes they choose ignorance simply because not being ignorant would make them uncomfortable. People are confident in their religion usually because no one they've ever met has questioned it. Their parents, family, friends, and community have all always supported and reinforced their particular religious ideals.
Today, however, the world is smaller. Small-town churches are not as often the center of people's social life. Therefore, "hard-core" religious values cannot be reinforced as much as in the past. So many people who might have otherwise been "hard-core" are now questioning. And their thoughts about religion ARE becoming less simple, only because they've been exposed to more than one idea about religion.
But the older generations today are very resistant to hearing things that differ from their long-standing beliefs. They tend to choose ignorance in many cases simply to preserve the order of their world. It's very hard to change worldviews in old age. These folks have always known God in a certain way, and they cling to that ideal. In many cases, they pass it on to their children. Hopefully, those children will not choose ignorance like their parents and will instead answer challenges to their faith, thus leading less "simplistic" and "hard-core" religious lives.

Romans 11:34 "Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" You can be one way with a coworker and another way with a girlfriend! Therefore, no one knows the real God just like no one but God knows the real you. We then can only go off of what he reveals to us in his bible. Some people take tradition and make it law and so they become hard core religious ignorant folk, but as for me and my house, we follow Jesus' teachings and not religious ignorance.

Hard-core religion will send you to hell. If you believe you have to do something to obtain salvation then Jesus Christ died in vain. He died for your sins, He was buried and took your sins away and He rose again the third day so all that would believe and trust in what He done could stand righteous before God. Salvation is a free gift. He done it all for us. Ephesians 2: 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

I think it is not ignorance, since we are all here sharing our stories and listening to others.
Well I know who God is because I have experienced Him. He give me inner peace and comfort despite life's troubles.
