I bought a collar for my cats and all of them are doing fine with them except one.
He's almost 2 and I believe he has mild mental retardation. Whenever we put the collar on him he just lays right down and WILL NOT move until we take it off. I left it on him overnight thinking that he would just have to get used to having it on, but he didn't move an inch all night.
I know the collar isn't too tight as I just slipped it on him like a long necklace, and he wouldn't trip on it, I just don't know what's going on with him.
Any ideas on this one?

I have a cat that if you put on a collar he'll do the same thing. When taking him to the vet they require a cage or collar and leash. He looked as if we killed him laying there. So I got a harness which he doesn't like but will crawl along the floor on his stomach like he's chained down. The vet laughed saying he doesn't like the weight on his body and also sees it as a sign of leaving the house and he doesn't want to leave his home, he's happy there and doesn't like change. If you don't need to put one on, don't do it. If he's an outside cat, go to your local ASPCA and they will put in a chip for about $10.

The collar is traumatizing to the cat. You really shouldn't put collars on cats unless they're breakaways anyway -- especially for cats that go outside. They can easily get caught on something and hurt themselves, strangle, or just get hung up and not be able to move until rescued.

The cat obviously feels like the collar is "holding him down" and its causing him distress. If he just won't take to it, please take it off and leave it off. Poor baby!

can't...it's impossible!! I don't prefer collars, especially on cats, since the collar is the single most dangerous thing to a pet. If your cat is as adventurous and courageous as mine are, they can get caught on something as they are jumping and hang themselves. I used to use collars until one of my former cats hanged herself...she's okay and is still alive, but i heard this aweful screaming coming from another room and walked in there and she was clinging to her 9th life when i pulled her down!! Poor thing. so, yeah, cat's don't like collars...besides, you're not taking them for walks anytime soon.

I don't think it's retardation. I think the cat doesn't like collars and has figured out that if he pouts long enough you'll take it off.

I never could keep a collar on mine: They always figured out ways to get them off.
