The Words of Wisdom prohibit use of caffeine. The Words of Wisdom also recommend a lot of other healthy dietary practices. Most Mormons believe that the appearance of evil is about the same as evil itself, and so do not drink even decaf. I'm not Mormon, but I think Mormon's, in general, are some of the nicest people in the world. I'm not a Christian either, but if I WERE Christian, I'd probably be Mormon ... they have a lot of good answers to stuff.

Latter Day Saints (Mormons) follow a code of health called the "Word of Wisdom" that prohibits consumption of unhealthy substances like tobacco, alcohol, and "hot drinks". The "hot drinks" part of the Word of Wisdom has been interpreted to mean Coffee and Tea. Some members of the church have extrapolated this to include other caffeinated drinks.

Though I personally think it has to do more with the super hot temp that most people drink them and the tannic acid that makes long-term coffee drinkers look like an old leather bag. :-)

Though your status as a "temple worthy" member of the church isn't taken away from drinking caffeine, it is part of our culture not to drink it. We have a health code called the "word of wisdom" that specifically states refraining from "hot drinks", which is interpretted to mean coffee and caffeinated teas. There are LOTS of us that do drink caffeinated soda and non-caffeine herbal teas. Ask your friend what his interpretation of the no-caffeine rule is.

There is no doctrine on specifically "caffine". There is though, however doctrine on not drinking alcohol, coffe, tea or hot drinks. We are counseled not to consume anything that can be habbit forming, which caffine is. Whether it is right or wrong, the prophet has not said, but he probably doesn't drink it. I don't just because there is no drink with caffine in it that I like, but my husband loves his Coca Cola! So, no it's not really true. We are just counseled to use our best judgement.

actually the caffeine in tea is not extracted from the leaves unless it is brewed with boiling water, which although we brew tea with steaming water, it is not boiling. so there is no caffeine in the tea we drink- it stays in the leaves. (unless of course you eat the leaves). and no Mormons do not drink caffeine.
