The Qur'an says-- " Oh ye who believe! Turn unto Allah in sincere repentance! It MAY be that your Lord will remit from you your evil deeds and bring you into the gardens underneath wihich rivers flow, on the day when Allah will not abase the prophet and those who believe with him. ( 66:8-9)
Notice how it says you MAY recieve forgiveness.
The 2 questions are:
How do you know you are sincere enough to be to be forgiven by Allah?
and
Does it give you peace to know that even if you are very sincere that, at best, you MAY recieve forgiveness? And if you say that you know you are sincere enough in your repentance, how do you know that you are not decieving yourself?

Yes actually because you are overlaying a Christian/Western understanding of justification/salvation onto a foreign system. You cannot do that! The question is not "are you saved" for a Muslim but rather "are you Muslim?" and "are you being obedient to the Qu'ran/the will of Allah?"

There is really no need to think about "forgiveness" or being forgiven, just about being Muslim.

That is why the appeals of Protestant Christianity (which is the "are you forgiven" / "are you saved"....non-Protestant Christians don't ask the questions that way) tend not to work, because there is nothing to be forgiven about if you have. submitted to Islam. The whole question just doesn't make sense and can be viewed as insulting to Muslims.

You have to find a different approach if you want to make any headway in a discussion with Muslims over Christianity vs. Islam.

Check surah 8 verse 66, Allah is with those who are patient. Not everything is within our understanding since Allah is the only one who has infinite knowlegde.
Muslims beleive in divine preordainment, that everything that is going to happen, good or bad has been written down by Allah, its up to Allah to forgive us, all we can do is do the best we can as muslims to follow the Prophet Muhammed and worship Allah.
Allahs mercy overcomes allah anger, this is written above Allahs throne ( i cant remember what hadith or quranic verse its from, sorry).
Every little thing, even having an intention of doing something good, results in a reward for a muslim.
Sinning for muslims does mean that we will go to hell for a time suited to the severity of our sins but as long as we beleived in Allah alone and followed the last prophet, we will go to Paradise afterwards.
Only Allah is to judge whether a Muslim is sincere or not, life isnt full of easy answers like a yes or no question, it is about striving for good so that Allah may be pleased with us.
It is just as easy to sin as it is just as easy to do a good deed. Allah always gives just rewards, he never does injustice.
The MAY means it depend on the weight of your good deeds and bad deeds, who out ways who?
Look up chapter 4 verse 146-7.
Hope my answer helped.

I'm not a Muslim, but it seems to me that you're taking the word "may" in a way that it may not be intended. Dictionary.com gives various definitions for "may". I won't list them all (I'll provide a link to the page, though) because some of them have nothing to do with this discussion (such as the month name), but there are two that do:

1. To be allowed or permitted to: "May I take a swim? Yes, you may."

2. Used to indicate a certain measure of likelihood or possibility: "It may rain this afternoon."

You seem to be reading this passage with the second definition in mind. If you read it with the first definition in mind, it changes the meaning of the passage quite a bit. You also have to remember that this is a translation or interpretation, so it's not really fair to be nit picky about the language. As for your first question, I would think that if someone's sincere, they're sincere, and if they're not, they're not. You can't be halfway sincere.

The Qur'an is a book of lies, did you also know that Islam teaches its followers to hate all other members of different faiths simply because they are not Muslims? The Qur'an is a book of ethnic hatred not a book that teaches love towards your fellow man.

Let the truth be told. You may not like it but it still is the truth so you can't change reality.

Non mUslims don't seem to be the one ones who get freaked out whilst Jihad is stated, a few of my famiy does too and sure they're Muslims!! THis is as they've the flawed knowledge of what it relatively approach, many simply consider what's obvious at the media that's flawed. To me Jihad approach to wrestle and stirve, for instance my Jihad is dressed in my scarf and protecting up at the same time I am external, whilst many dislike the concept, nonetheless I attempt to be a higher individual even though I cross by way of struggles. Furthermore even waking up the Morning (fajr) prayer, that's my is my Jihad, as whilst many are tucked away well (",) I rise up to wish. Your question is posed in terms of a christian certain of forgiveness - and attempting to entrap people into serious discussion of islam.

Will you bloody missionaries please GO HOME!!!! You can't do ANYTHING to redeem George W. Bush's insane foolishness and incompetence, you can't convert Muslims with this ridiculous posturing on a web site, and you can't alter the opinions of people who already agree with you.

As you see from the replies above mine, you can never, ever, engage Muslims in a serious logical discussion on their religion. They are brain washed from birth and their minds are locked. Their response to anything they do not like is insult, violence and murder.
