I heard that DVLA are screwing up some peoples licences. I need to change my address and i was told that if thier computer removes my entitlements, then i will have to retake my test etc from scratch. I heard a Police officer had to retake his cbt , and get his full bike test again, in order to ride a motorcycle.... He had sent off his licence to update it and dvla removed his bike entitlement and they refused to put it back on, saying he never had it, even though he was a police bike cop???.
So im concerned if i send off my licence i might loose my licnce.
I know DVLA are wishy-washy, as when you phone them up the information they give isnt always right, as been reported in MCN magazine of the past months
So what can i do?

DVLA quote all sorts of things and make all sorts of mistakes including losing logbooks 'in the post' etc. Then DVLA put the onus on you to sort it out and pay relevant fines etc. I have dealt with many issues with DVLA over many years and never lost yet. I always photocopy anything I give to DVLA and then I always deal directly with the local DVLA office because you can ensure that everything done there is correct and up to date. The local DVLA office computers are directly linked to DVLA Swansea. Ask for a receipt from the office for anything you give them. The local DVLA office will then send any paperwork for you to the main DVLA office from which you will then receive any new/replacement paperwork in the post from them. As DVLA do not use registered mail, if you do not receive your new licence within 28 days, write to them and tell them because legally if they lose it in the post and you never receive it, then they must send another free of charge. I know people who abuse this system by claiming not to have received there licence and then got a second replacement licence as well. But, be aware, licences have issue numbers and claimed lost licences are made invalid. Only one drawback to using your local DVLA office - because more and more people use this facility now, there are always long queues.

The best thing you can do with the idiots at the dvla is back up your proof, get your letter and licence photocopyed, when sending letter have it recorded mail and there then your proof that you sent it. I find they dont update log books either... they say their up-to-date with car tax etc but their not. I sold a car over a year ago, did everything correctly and had a letter from them with a out of tax letter for the damn car, when its no longer mine. It was a lot of hassle over nothing and adventually got sorted. So if in doubt back it all up, with witnesses, addresses, photocopys, recorded mail.. what ever it takes... why should you suffer over their negluance.

We just got a new computer system back in November for our driver licenses. Had prob. at first but, much much better now.

ne who...
Ppl. come in and change there address all the time. Lots of ppl. have like motorcycle or vessel on there licenses also. If ur just making a change of address everything should stay on the DL that was on it before the address change. Check everything closely before u leave.

In Alabama we issue temporaries so... ur hard copy is mailed to u from Montgomery. We also have ppl. sign stuff after they viewed all info. and that it is correct.

Best thing I tell ppl. if they don't have to change there address to wait if they have no prob. saves them money. So.. its up to the customer.

Take a copy of your license before you send it off, or report it lost and get them to send you a new one.

Either way if it comes back wrong you have proof of your entitlement?

Make a photocopy of your license front and back showing all endorsements etc. Should help if you need to have the discussion. Also, instead of mailing it in, go in person.
