You can try all of these websites recommended, but bottom line is READ THE FARE RULES for whatever source you use. Compare the airlines website to the travel sites before making a decision. A lot of times you will find cheaper fares directly with the airlines and you will save on the booking fee's the travel sites tack on. Some sites like Priceline, Cheaptickets, Hotwire, Lowestfare and other sites like these where you cant see what you are getting lock you in to the ticket. You can not make changes for any reason, so be sure you are going to travel if you use them.
Also, check the airports websites of where you are travelling. Find out what airlnes service them because many do not participate in these websites such as Southwest and Jet Blue who are low cost carriers. But even then, I have still found better deals on Delta and Air Tran than I have on Southwest or Jet Blue. The main thing is shop around, dont just pick one site and go with it. Price compare and see what you can find.

www.sidestep.com
My boss told me about it. It searches ALL the websites for the best price and then links you to it.
