From entering the Foreign Legion as a plain soldier until becoming a Major, how much would it take me? Does my previous education matter to this?
If you refer to the US standards it would also be helpful.

It depends. To become a Mayor or a get a high political position like that one you most of the time need: merits, funds, political experience, and of course popular support. The merits are those things you have accomplished in life with your own effort and you feel proud of, the funds are the financial resources you need in order to pay for advertisement in your political campaing, political experience is the one you have adquired previously and you can use to get advantage of your opponent, and finally, popular support is the trust people place in you because of your ideas, background and service. A good combination of these four element should pay off.

Of course, this is harder that it looks, since some people tend to get and blend the four element easier than others and sometimes the second element (funds) is what actually gets you into business.

My father entered the army as a major. Education is important upon entering the armed forces. If you wish to save your self a decade, try enrolling in a ROTC or OCS.
