I haven't lost mine or anything, but I hear it really ruins a trip quickly if you lose your passport. What did you have to do to replace it?

Yes I did I left it in a Taxi in Guadalajara, Mexico. First thing you do is report it to the Embassy or Consulate. They must be notified right away. They will issue a new passport. Did you have a copy of the old one? Now it takes about two weeks to get a new one. You can pay extra and get one in say 24 hours. Go on Passport on Google to find out more. You realize American passports are worth a lot of money to an illegal.

When traveling abroad, even to Mexico or Canada, bring your passport and a copy of your passport. Keep the copy in a safe place and give a copy to your traveling companion. If you do lose your passport, immediately contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate and present them with the passport copy. They can resolve this issue fairly quickly.

Also, you can register with the US Embassy through State Dept website (http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/registration/registration_1186.html) so they know when and where you will be traveling overseas. This is helpful because they can e-mail alerts to you if the area you are visiting becomes unstable or there are security issues. Have fun with your travels.

I lost mine briefly when I visited Iceland a few years ago. I placed it on my carry-on while waiting for my luggage, and it slipped off. Thankfully, I realized this before leaving the airport (I was visiting freinds at the US Naval station, and needed it to get on base). It took a little searching and some grovelling, but it had been returned to security. I'm sure they recognized my since I look as tired and worn out in my picture as I did on my arrival. This, by the way, is my theory why passport photos are always so unflattering.

No way!

My husband did that once, before we were married. He was in the US on a H1B for the Y2K issues. He was travelling back to the US and was in Germany. Somehow he put his travel docs in a bag that went in the belly of the plane. And, that is when his luggage got lost.

The German officals gave him a hard time. But, eventually after 8 hours they gave him some sort of pass to get out of the airport. He ended up in a hotel and doing some sightseeing.

He missed his connecting flight because he didn't have a passport to board.

I've never lost mine, but I believe if you do and you are out of your home country you should contact your country's embassy or consulate immediately. I don't know about other country's, but if you lose an American one there is a fee to replace it. There are emergency passports, but you have to be able to prove the need for one, like with your airline ticket or something.

I hear it can be a real pain...but I don't know personally because I don't have one. I'm an American and I've only ever traveled to Canada and Mexico and a passport wasn't needed.

If you lose it, you need to go to the American Embassy in the country where you are. They will need papers to verify who you are.(driver's license) They can replace it for you.
