I always ask to have no mushrooms in a salad or whatever, and people always ask me why I do it. They say they have no taste.

Mushrooms are a unique food group. The button mushrooms you commenly get with salads have been chilled and are bland, it's true. But there is a whole world of many different kinds of mushrooms that have wonderful , subtle flavors when they are cooked in dishes. Some have a strong earthy taste and others are very mild.
Mushrooms are very delicate and usually are added at the end of a dish when using them for cooking.

Even the button mushrooms, that are served raw in salads will pick up flavor, when they are cooked in a pasta sauce or some other dish.
One of the best recipes I saw using mushrooms was for a mushroom sauce served over polenta. I found it on a wine page on the internet and it used 6 different mushrooms . It sounded YUMMY!

Actually they are very flavorful. Given that, they still tend to inheret the flavor of whatever it is cooked in/near. Most people who do not like mushrooms say it is not appealing to the eye or that they aren't palatable (the chewy texture). I like some mushrooms and dislike others so I am rather ambilvilent as to whether or not they are on my plate, but I do cook with them as their flavor cannot be duplicated.
