I don't think so. I have had both and the root canal was a lot less painful and it took a lot less time to recover afterwords. You don't have to worry about losing the clot with a root canal, you don't have to worry about them having the break the tooth apart before pulling it (like with a molar) which I thought was horribly uncomfortable, and you get to keep the tooth which is usually a plus. Only problem is that pulling a tooth costs just a couple hundred dollars (usually) while root canals can cost a couple thousand once you get the procedure, the fill and/or post, and the crown. So if cost is an issue, like it is with me, pulling the tooth may be the way to go.

Sorry to say, yes. They gave good anestetic but when they finally hit the nerve (it took quite a while) I felt like I was going to die and they needed to give me another shot. They gave me good pain meds afterwards.
It was awful and I'd much rather have a tooth pulled. however, I'd rather not go around looking like toothless Uncle Lou. The biggest problem was the damn cost. Even with insurance!
I was, however, happy to have the root canal done because the pain of the infection, etc in the tooth before the root canal was the worst thing I have felt since being hit by a car!

It depends, I had a root canal and it didn't hurt. It just took a long, long time. I know some are more painful, if the tooth is attached to the bone for ex. I'd rather pull my tooth out, then have another root canal though.

No, absolutley not....I'd rather have a root canal done any day verus a tooth being pulled. Just make sure you have a dentist/oral surgeon you trust. I've has 3 root canals and 4 wisdoms pulled. I exchange the wisdom pulling for a root canal anyday...

Sorry but these answers are NOT typical.

Most of the time there is some sensitivity - the tooth had major surgery - but major pain, no.

Most of the cases of major pain, and the stories about root canal misery are either told by those wanting to scare you, or by those who waited WAY too long. If you wait too long, you get a massive infection. That won't heal overnight, in that case, yes there will be pain after.

Most dentist's would want to know if you are in pain, to help you.

yes, having your tooth pulled is like nothing compared to a root canal, with a tooth pulling they give you drugs, pull the tooth, and then the next day your good, root canals hurt for like a week after, and during even with drugs

i have had two root canals and one tooth pulled. todays technology allows, and is in favor of, saving your tooth whenever possible, so, to answer your question, after my experience with both, the root canal was much less painful and i recovered from it much quicker! as a matter of fact, the root canal didn't hurt at all.

I've never had a tooth pulled, but I've had root canals. They don't hurt, but they do take a long time. The plus is you save your tooth.

I have a pretty high pain tolerance, so I get my dental work done without the anesthesia. I've had both done. Over-all, the tooth pulling was worse. The reason why was because of having to get crud out of the hole all of the time when brushing my teeth and after eating.
