I think this is something to do with Psychology. It's a feeling of Euphoria, same as when you won a gamble, or consume drug. It produces a kind of chemical in your brain once you hit a good shot, that you want to experience it again and again. And because hitting good shot, like a hole in one is difficult to achieve, golf then become addictive.

At first glance, because the ball is just sitting there stationary (as opposed to baseball, tennis, etc) waiting for you to hit it, it shouldn't be too tough a game to master....right? Wrong again Bogie Breath! It is really hard and a lot of us "atheletes" have a tough time accepting that.

With 14 clubs in your bag to choose from and a myriad of different (and difficult) lies on the course, it takes a lot of mental agility to figure out what to do with each shot. Then consider the fact that golf involves a rare blend in sports; alternating use of brute strength (with the driver) and deft touch (chips and putts).

So, to me the great appeal is that it is both mentally and physically challenging all at the same time. I personally find that combination fascinating so that is why I like golf so much!

Why is gambling additive, why are video games, why are drugs? Why, because you get something from them, whether it be to "beat the system", "win back your money", or "prove you can do better".
For me, "it was because, my whole life seemed to be controlled in someway by either education, a boss, a parent, other team or co-workers, or some outside influence that did not allow me to stretch as far as I wanted to go and obtain the goals that I wanted to obtain. With golf, it is an individual sport that you can excel to any heights you want, and it is totally dependent upon you and your passion to do so, not by those who wish to control your destiny.
I can be as good as I want to be!

Because you always want your next shot to be a good one. And for me it seems that I suck the whole round until about hole 15 and I play well. So I always think the next game will be good. You would think that I would learn my lesson.

Because it gets you out of the house and away from your old lady for a few hours so you can enjoy some piece and quiet with your buddies (and a few beers, too!)...

well, when you play a round you only have a handful of great/good shots, and the feeling from those is euphoric and you keep playing to get that feeling back.
