I do not know what kind of dog you have but it is their natural instinct to scratch, dig, turn in a circle or two before lying down. I crate trained my now 3 year old yellow lab. It is a very safe, secure and comfortable place for them. The only time my dog uses her crate now is when we have a bad rain storm. She hates the thunder and lightning. As long as she is in there with the door closed and a blanket over the whole thing she feels very safe. I applaud you for crate training. You will be very pleased. Later, if you decide to get a dog pillow/cushion for him to sleep on in the family room you will see he will do the same thing when he goes to settle down. It is just their way of relaxing.

I assume that your dog is a house pet and does not get to go outside and just be a dog. Dogs like to dig in the dirt. They will dig a new spot to lay down in to sleep, usually when it gets hot. The ground is a little cooler and moist -- so they will dig to find a cooler spot -- but if they are inside they will still scratch or try to dig a cooler spot to lay in.

My puppy does the same thing to the pillow in his crate and I just figued he was trying to get comfy. Oh...and he also does it to the couch before he lays down : )
I guess it's just like people fluffing their pillows or turning pillows to the cool side.

your dog is freshening there scent, they have there own odor. then they usually sniff around in circles until they catch the center of the scent. ever notice your dog laying on there back and wiggling? they are leaving a scent or marking there scent/territory. sometimes they do that to there toys also. they have have scent glands in there back mostly, and went a female is in heat, that too is where the excitement comes from, not just from behind.

Usually dogs (in old days and even now) used to dig up holes in the sand, so that he can be comfortable and not too hot and sleep in there. So maybe he is just doing traditional stuff....
