Like you, we were ready to do the same when our old tv bought the farm. After looking at MANY LCD tv's in various stores, all of them showing the picture from the same signal, the Sony 42" KDFE 42A10 appeared far superior to the other models. I'm no Sony fanatic at all, but I have to admit that its picture quality was head and shoulders above the other units. We bought one about six months ago, and I'm still very happy with it, particularly when viewing HD stations, and the non-HD channels also show up as at least on a par with the last tv we had, which had an excellent picture. Below is a link with sites that are selling this set at various prices. Good luck.

Went through the same gymnastics and decided the best TV out there for the value was the Sony 50" 780P. Great picture, speakers in front and HD Tuner built in. Cost now under $2,000 if you shop around.

You have to realize that there are two kinds of LCD sets: flat panel and rear projector. My opinion, and from what I've read in magazine reviews, the Sony SXRD is the best projector, the Sharp Aquos the best flat panel.

This LCD doesnt display like an LCD, I've seen it, this thing glows really nice. Not too big and not too small... just the right size.
