Check the fluid level with the engine idling in park. (make sure that the engine is warmed up). Color and odor are good indications of the condition, as the previous poster noted. If you have not the skills or cash to work on it, you can try a pour in additive, but it will not solve your problem long term. I'd try SeaFoam TransTune, or TransX, both should be available from your local parts store. (O'reilly's, Checker, Advanced Auto)
The long term solution may be as simple as a torque converter, or as hard as a overhaul. Either way transmission work on your car will mean removing at least a pan and probably the entire tranny. Expect to spend at least $500 and be prepared for $2000 or more if it needs overhaul.

what color is the fluid? is it a bright pink or has it turned brown or black? if brown, try flushing it or at least servicing it. if black, take it in for repairs a.s.a.p.. the more you drive it, the more damage it may do. and of course the higher price to repair. FYI: servicing or flushing can also worsen the malfunction especially if the clutch packs are disintegrating. you've got a 50/50 chance of fixing it via this route.

If you want it to make a few more miles to the garage...Lucas transmission fluid will help....but in the end there wont be much left.
