I check backpacks all the time when I travel overseas for hiking trips. Just make sure all your straps are secured (so they don't get ripped off) and any removeable straps are taken off and stored inside, so they don't get lost. Hook your hip straps together (around the back so they are over the pack and not hanging loose) and you should be fine.
OH and don't forget to clearly label it with your name, address, phone number, etc.

People check back packs all of the time. 40lb is the weight limit for a carry on, so keep that in mind too when deciding. Also, remember that you are allowed 2 checked pieces under 50lb each on most US Domestic flights. Also, keep in mind that a back pack will not be as secure as a suit case. Any fabric kind of baggage can get damaged or wet if there is weather in any city you go through. So dont put anything of value in there. Also lock the zippers or get plastic zip ties to secure it shut. Put your itinerary and contact information for both origing and destination inside.
You can check it, people do all of the time.

You can check in your backpack. During check-in you will be given a luggage check-in slip. This is important in event you need to trace your backpack at your destination. Or making a claim in event of loss.
Labelling your backpack will make it easier to identify it. Anyway, most international flights allow you 7kg or reasonably-sized bag to be carried on board as carry-on luggage. As long as you do not seem to be lugging it with you!
So if you thing it can fit in the overhead luggage compartment, it should be alright to carry with you. Otherwise checking it in will be good option.

Southrntrnzplnt.. which airline do u work for??? just wondering :)
I'm more into international.. so KE is 12lbs / LO n LL is 10lbs..
You should see the passengers face and their anger when they came frm domestic airlines.. Sorry.. just feel bad for them..
If ur backpack is 2 small then go for a carryon size lugguage.. then check in.. save u all the time inside the cabin trying to find place to put ur stuff..

Many times they will allow this size, but you will have to out in into the over head bins, they will not allow for it under the front seat, I tried it! If there is no flight attendant around you can get away with it!
