When I was an Atheist, it consumed most of my time. Most of my atheist friends thought about it all of the time also. Do you know many Atheists that are not thinking about religion a lot of the time? Do you find most Atheists think about religion in a bitter way (ie the world would be better without it, it promotes discrimination, etc)

I only think about religion when I am discussing or debating. I like to do both. I don't look at religion in a bitter way. If it makes you happy go ahead and believe. Just because I don't understand why you do doesn't mean I think you should stop.

Atheists that spend all of their time thinking about religion are probably not true atheists. Atheism is, in itself, denying the existance of any higher power. Agnosticism sounds more like a better way to describe what you were. Agnostic is pretty much just a fancy term for someone who chooses not to associate themselves with any specific religion, but still questions the existance of a higher being.

Most atheists (and agnostics) don't hate anyone - they just are tired of the damage done by organized religion. Let's see... the Romans persecution of Jews and Christians, many genocidal wars like the Crusades and Jihads, the Nazis murder of Jews and Gypsys, the forced "reeducation" of Native American children, the bombings and political strife in Ireland, the mass murders going on today in Darfur, etc, etc, etc.

Any time a group of people gets together and declares itself (or its God) superior to others, there is bound to be trouble.

Belief in a spiritual being provides many with comfort and strength. I think that anyone who is living a morally responsible life is a good person, regardless of what they do or don't choose to believe in as a deity.

Like you, I have to admit that I have tested the waters of being an Atheist too, if only for a brief moment in my life. That was when it dawned on me that I had been CHEATED and LIED TO by the FALSE DOCTRINES and FALSE TEACHINGS of the church of my fathers.

Needless to say, my GREAT DISILLUSIONMENT and DISAPPOINTMENT spawned a lot of BITTERNESS within me... until I realized that I was merely conned by FALSE PROPHETS and IMPOSTORS [hypocrites] in some dark alley of my youth.

And looking back now, I'm only too glad that I did find a way out of that cul-de-sac called 'Organized Religion' or more commonly known as 'Church' to follow a light emanating from a distant lamp post...

It is such a relief to know that I have left all that heavy luggage of BITTERNESS back there where it belongs. For sure there are SOME 'Atheists' out there who are still walking on the same shoes that I wore and they prefer to remain and wallow in the dark.

Peace be with you!

Well, I know some Atheists that think as you suggest. But I also, as a believer, feel that religion is used far to often as an instrument of hate and would very much like to see the power of the church diminish to only the power of its own teachings and not the power to shape the political and minority laws.

No, I am an atheist and I have strong views on religion but don't care much unless i'm having a debate or something. Religion is a strong cause of whats wrong in the world. Imagine a world without it? No religious nuts suicide bombing themselves so they can reach 76 virgins, blah, blah, blah..... You get the point.

It's like being a recovering addict. You spend some time reminding yourself why you don't go back. And no I am not bitter at "God" for anything. Actually my life has been OK. I'm not trying to live my life in sin, actually I'm not a bad person. I just don't agree with certain things that are central to the belief system.

I'm agnostic, and I only think about religion once in a while. If it comes up in the news or something. The rest of the time I've got more important things to think about.

the irony is that atheists are practicing a religion. A religion is nothing but a collection of beliefs. all atheists believe is not to believe. i believe they do. the Bible says no man can look at the stars and say there is no God.
