The Neece family comes from the ancient Scottish Dalriadan clans of the mountainous west coast of Scotland. The name Neece is derived from the personal name NAOS, which is a dialectal for of Aonghus or Angus. The Gaelic form of the name is MacNeis, which is derived from the earlier for Mac Naois; both of these mean son of Angus. Thus the name Neece is a cognate of McAngus and McInnes.

Spelling variations include: MacNeish, MacNeice, MacNish, MacNess, MacKness and MacNeece.

First found in Perthshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by early kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

Some of the first settlers of this name were: Thomas McNeish who settled in Philadelphia, PA in 1868 and Michael McNish who settled in Philadelphia, PA in 1866.

Family motto was: "By Courage, Not By Craft."
