If you tell us any errors you get or what operating system you have, we might be able to give more help. Try this....
Option #1
You might have a program running that is causing them not to run. Try hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL and end every program except Explorer. Then try running your scans.
Option #2
Try starting your computer in safe mode. I don't know your operating system, but go here to find out how.
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
Once you're in safe mode, try running scan disc and defrag.
Most likely you need to just end some programs before you try again. Good luck!

Are you using the disk scan/defrag program that came with your Operating System...WinXP?
If so, this program at times indicates it is unable to operate correctly. A separate program might work more efficiently for you.
Disk Keeper which runs in the background continuously works to defrag your drive. I found that my system which I usually keep quite heavy with programs/utilities, was never any more than 1% fragmented with this program running.
It scans and defrags reasonably quick and is dependent upon how large the drive is, how fragmented and how fast the system is.
The program is available for free trial here, http://www.lyonware.co.uk/Diskeeper.htm
The problem is most likely how you are trying to get this done, rather than problems with your hard drive. Go here http://tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 tho if you still have problems or if you want to check the hard drive out anyway. Locate the hard drive you have and there will be a utility you can run to test the integrity of your drive.
Good luck

If you are using Windows XP you don't need to defrag anymore your comp because windows xp is multitasking. About errors, try to run it yourself, it shouldn't cause errors if your hard drive is ok.

You have a virus. You need to get some virus detection. The best program I have ever found is Kaspersky. Norton and McAfee have been hacked to much and most viruses can deflect there virus detection.
