Parents are not over protective of their children. Yes, it is true that some parents are more cautious about the things they let their children do and see than other parents. No matter how much you try to protect children, you can't stop them from being hurt. I hope this helps.

There is no guidebook for parents and so everyone parents in a different way. The only way you can tell if your parents are overprotective is by comparing them to those of your contemporaries - and I'm not talking "Well, Jenny's parents said she could!" I'm talking "Jenny, Jessica, Robert, Donald, Horace, Zippy, John, Frank, Donna, Josh, Toby, AND C.J.'S parents all said it was okay." Even then, you should sit them down and find out what the reasons are behind their decision are. If they can only pull out the old "Because I said so!" Then you may have overprotective parents.

My parents were extremely overprotective . My brother and myself have suffered emotionally because of this. When you are only allowed to go away once a week for no reason just because they said so and you are in highschool ; when they make you sit in front of them and they poke you and when you cry out they yell and hit you ; when they pick on you until you cry than they make fun of your crying ; ......thats all that I can share

Before I was an adult and in my teens, I felt strongly my parents were overprotective. I knew the restrictions they placed on me were severe. I was the only one of my pack of friends who didn't get to do nearly as much.

I got my eye opener and understanding a little early though. My Junior year prom, I wasn't allowed to go to Daytona with the rest of my friends. We were quite a pack. My Date wanted me to go, she wanted to spend the night with me there. Woo Hoo, right?

Yeah.

They were speeding to Daytona at 1am for the holiday inn they had reserved rooms at, minus me. After the wreck, I attended all 5 funerals.

Suddenly, it all makes sense. I pray you don't have to go through such a loss to learn that too.

You can usually tell when parents dont let their kids do things that most other kids are allowed to. Also, when parents ask and extreme number of questions even when the situation will be harmless.

They don't trust you even though you are responsible. They don't like your friends even though they've never met them. They want to know where you are and what you are doing at all times. They won't let you date, or they chaperone your dates. They won't let you out of the house in clothing they deem questionable. They eavesdrop on your conversations and may even have a hidden tape recorder around somewhere recording your phone calls.

(assuming you are an older teenager)

If they don't let you date, if you have a curfew before dinnertime, if you don't HAVE a curfew because they accompany you everywhere you go, if they picked out your car with an eye to safety only, and if they are peeking over your shoulder right now. And if they won't let you say "crud", "dang", "oh my God", and don't let you use slang, and don't let you answer back.
