he is being very protective of you or he has never had very much encounter with people or strange dogs and is showing that way to bluff them. Not all dogs labled as gentle will always remain so. it depends alot on the breeding. He is also reaching an age where he will start really protecting his area or territory. I have seen many a male dog turn this way at 5 or 6 years of age.

There are many questions to be answered before your question can be answered. Do you socialize with your dog and how often. Do you walk your dog often? Knowing your dog is going to react the way it does, what have you done to prevent it? When you and your dog are together, who is the leader? Do you treat your dog like a dog or part of your family?
Dogs are social, they like being with their pack, but there can only be one leader. If you are not the lead than your dog will be; meaning you no long get to choose who joins your pack, your dog does and the first thing the dog is going to do is show any potential pack members who is leader.
You need to have your dog in full control when any person comes near. A choke collar is best (if you know how to use it properly) because it allows you to contol the head. Never pull or choke the dog, instead think of how you tug on a person's shirt or jacket to get their attention. That is what you do with the leash, a fast short jerk to grab attention and then tell them no or hush.
Once your dog is sure you are controlling what will happen around you, it will start being a happy follower and trusting your jusdgement in people.

Most Labs are nice dogs but I have worked with some nasty ones as well. This behavior is unacceptable (not to mention dangerous) no matter if he is being protective or not. It sounds like you need to take him to some obedience classes and get control of him before someone gets hurt. Watch Cesar Milan, you could learn alot from his show.
Pick a trainer that has worked with aggression. There are alot of crappy trainers out there, so choose wisely! I would stay away from Petco and Petsmart and choose a serious training club.

My sister in law has a 4 year old yellow lab and acts the exact same way. She thinks it was abused at the home where she adopted him. But she never had the dog socialize right away. But it does sound like your dog is just protecting his owner. I can't even go into their home without getting a LOVE nip(chomp in the arm). If you have a local dog obedience training center close by, try them for some basics. Good luck.

No matter the cause, behavioral correction must take place immediately before it escalates. Along with all the great suggestions below, try carrying a water gun on walks. When people approach, get him to sit. If he gets tense when people get closer, give him a quick shoot in the face with water while saying "NO!" If he sits back down, praise and give treats. Also, it is important to remember to remain calm and try not to get nervous with new people approaching or entering your home. Dogs are extremely sensitive to the nevousness of their owners, whether or not it's because they are the cause of the nervousness or not. They think everyone's the enemy at that point, and act accordingly.

He's probably either a bit frightened, excited, or extremely protective over you. My lab usually doesn't bark when I take her out, but from inside she does. I have to go get her to calm down and pet her and usually i'll try to distract her with a toy. Let your dog get to know the people before you lock him inside, a hand sniff usually does the trick.

Labs are nice dogs, and so is my black lab. He is getting older, and as dogs age progress he gets more protactive over you. Mabye he is just turning moody. Is he fixed? If not, he might need to be. He is just getting older. Mabey that is just he's way of saying, I am the boss, this is the other boss, so back off.
