I love Smart car's cute look and fuel efficiency. But is it safe enough to drive among big SUVs and trucks? The collision test was done with a regular passenger car. What if Smart gets hit by a SUV or a truck? Is the windshield strong enough against impact from a taller vehicle? Is Smart easy to roll over?

In any very small car, you will be less safe than an equivalently modern big car. Plain and simple - compared to a Suburban, you're a ping-pong ball.

That's not to say that it's totally unsafe - and there's always a trade-off between safety and economy. If you spend almost all of your time on 25mph city streets, and you don't drive in "high danger" areas where there are a lot of crashes, you'll probably be fine. If you do a lot of freeway travelling or go through a lot of dangrous intersections, you'd be better off getting something with a bit more substantial.

They get great gas mileage, but they were supposed to be a lot cheaper than they are.

If a smart gets hit by an SUV its not the windshield i would worry about because of its short wheel base the impact energy cant be absorbed and the crash would intrude in to drivers zone. The Smart is fairly easy to roll over.

The small lose in an accident. The reason that all small car drivers are not dead or injured is that they have more maneuverability, stop faster, and the drivers tend to drive defensively which is the smartest thing of all.

NO. Weight and mass are your best defense against
a serious accident. The bigger the car or truck, the more
weight, and more space there is to absorb an impact. That smart car is a golf cart with an engine. Small cars are no match against trucks and SUV's. A few bucks on gasoline is not worth your life.
