We are told that the price of gas is so much because demand is up. The Chinese are purchasing more gas, the Indians are purchasing more gas. But no one ever says, the US Army is purchasing more gas. Hummers in the US get 9 MPG I am guess a fully armored Hummer gets 1 to 2 MPG (based on Hummer Limos).

I have been trying to figure out, just how much demand has increased, because of military operations.

most military vehicles use diesel fuel, there a need for gasoline but not as much as you would imagine. all the fuel the military uses is of very low grade. lets just say your honda civic would die out after about 10 miles using military "mo gas". i think there is mor a need for aviation fuels as apposed to ground vehicles. i was in a helicopter unit in iraq and i know our birds flew more in that year than the past 5 in the states.

Okay -
First of all, you're way off with your MPG assessment of how much a "Hummer" gets in the Army. For one thing, they're not Hummers. A Hummer is a civilian vehicle on a civilian chassis, loosely modeled after the military vehicle. Never mind how much mileage a Hummer limo gets. Military HMMWV's (high-mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicles) run on diesel, and their mileage varies widely, depending on maintenance, the type of diesel used, the mission, and the terrain.

Any army will use more fuel during combat operations than at other times, but remember that even when they're not at war, they're training a lot - so the difference will be quite a lot, but probably not as much as you'd expect.

HOWEVER - I'd imagine that the difference between wartime and peacetime military fuel useage is miniscule, compared to the difference between fuel useage in China and India ten years ago and fuel useage there now.

Thank you, Think First for a thorough answer.

Let's not forget increased demand due to the rising popularity of SUV's (refer to your mpg "quotes" above) and that more families have more cars than before. Even if you take out the collector vehicles and others that sit mostly unused, there are still a heck of a lot of gasoline burning vehicles on our roads. "Innovative" countries with their heads on straight are putting higher prices on fuel, parts, even driver's licensing, as well as increasing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions, and providing outstanding public transportation systems to help curb the problem of traffic and pollution. If America put half as much effort into such issues, less people would gripe about the cost of a gallon of gas.

It's a sad day when someone can buy a red, plastic, oversized SUV and think they're suddenly high-speed and on track with our military.

Gas usage is 32 dollars or 1,7 gallons less during peace time, according with narrow factors and delay functions. Supposedly in peace times there are expected constructions and roads, yet nowadays most are built by civilians and military train in bases mostly, only twice a year they are sent out except in three countries.

I am an aviator on the USS Nimitz and I know that the demand for jet fuel skyrockets because planes stay on patrol twice the time they do in peace time; it's the same thing for land operations.
