With a spoon, take a few grains from the pot, blow on them to cool them, then press them between your thumb and index finger. Squash them and if there are no hard gritty bits, it is cooked. There is such a thing as a rice cooker which does everything for you and works wonderfully well. If you eat a lot of rice it is well worth buying................

If you have a rice-cooker, the button should pop. Other than that, different rice have different cooking time, but mostly when they're plump and soft, but not mushy. If it's crunchy or firm, then it's a bit undercook. Kinda like pasta, when pasta goes limp and soft, it's done.
