Let's see the God of the bible sent an evil spirit of the Lord in 1 Samuel 16:14. This God also kill 42 children by a she bear for calling a prohpet old baldy. God Also created some for damnation (Hell) and some for glory (Heaven) Romans 9:21 - 23
What did Satan do? Well biggest thing is opened the door for humanity to know good and evil. Without this knlowledge we would have been incapable of making any choices. After all can have freewill unless you know that there are multiple choices!
I'd say at best both figures have good and evil qualities.

Maybe Satan doesn't really exist and is just used as a scare-tactic to believe in God?
True Satanic beliefs have been so distorted by christianity that now they're looked upon as evil because they don't follow the path of Christianity. Remember the Crusaides was an attempt to spread the word of God throughout the world and kill those who didn't want to conform (sounds like Communism?). The true form of Satanism isn't really bad. It's more along the lines of anti-conformism.
It's like how Democracy has distorted the true form of Communism and turned it into something bad.

Satan is never portrayed as evil in the bible. He is actually portrayed as god's accusing angel.
God is portrayed as both good and evil in the bible. Satan is just an employee.
Here is a quote for ya:
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."
I find it common that both people who worship the god of the bible and people who wroship satan just come up with their own concepts of each. It's often the case that neither has any idea what is actually said about either in the bible. And that's your real answer... people believe what they want.
That's why people believe any of this crap.

The Christian concept of Satan was invented by the Catholic Church when King James did away with Paganism and called all remaining Pagans "heretics." In order to smoothly and slyly convert Pagans to Christianity, he incorporated many of their beliefs, deities and ceremonies into Christianity (Such as Easter). The Pagans of that time believed in a God and a Goddess. The God was the ruler of the earth, hunting and the secular. He was depicted as a horned beast, as most of the animals hunted for food were horned. The Goddess ruled the harvest, fertility, the weather and the spiritual realm. In those times, anyone who wasn't Christian (Pagans), were ANTI-Christian and, so, were considered evil. Their horned beast then came to be regarded as the Anti-Christ, later evolving into the current concept of Satan, the horned beast, who is in opposition to Jesus and God. When, in reality, Satanists don't believe in the Christian God and, so, they couldn't possibly worship a Deity who is in opposition to God.
The beliefs, practices and rituals of the Church of Satan have few, if any, points of similarity with the Christian or Muslim concept of Satan. The CoS' Satan is pre-Christian, and derived from the Pagan image of power, virility, sexuality and sensuality. Satan is viewed as a force of nature, not a living quasi-deity. Their Satan has nothing to do with Hell, demons, pitchforks, sadistic torture, demonic possession, and profound evil.
Some of their beliefs and practices are:
They do not worship a living deity.
Major emphasis is placed on the power and authority of the individual Satanist, rather than on a god or goddess.
They believe that "no redeemer liveth" - that each person is their own redeemer, fully responsible for the direction of their own life.
"Satanism respects and exalts life. Children and animals are the purest expressions of that life force, and as such are held sacred and precious..."

Satan needs a part in this reality we live in, only because without satan everything around us would become inbalanced. God and Satan are a formula for Truth. Just a formula, neither one signifies anything else except the amount of balance it carries to adjust to our constant FLUX. look it up.
Worshipping satan or God is only what you feel about YOURSELF deep inside. Just look at the styles that Satan worshippers and God worshippers. They dress differently.

Some people want to be evil. They want to make the lives of others worse. Others surviving well and being happy bothers them so they try to prevent it. Satanism can attact such people like flies to honey. Other things that attract these type of people are things that you can use to hurt others secretly like government, education, mental health and such. Not to say everyone in those fields are evil, just places where evil can secretly do bad.

I think most Satan worship is out of rebellion.
This rebellion can be to several things
- God
- A religion
- Family
Most of the rest of us don't understand it either.
With love in Christ.

Some believe that they are 2 sides of the same coin (Dualism). Some believe there are neither. My sources say that Satan is a rehash of Shaitan.
I do believe however if you look up the Hebrew meaning of Lucipher, you'll find that the name means "Light Bringer".
Kind of presents a vexing question of its own eh?

Well, contrary to popular beleif. "Satanists" don't actually worship Satan. They worship pleasure... they simply do anything that feels good to them without moral qualms. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Satanist... I'm just spurting off facts!
