Anytime I take one of my pets to the vet to have a precedure done that they need to be sedated for, my vet wants to run blood tests to see if they will be okay with the anasthesia. Is this test really neccessary?

well, dependant on the age of your pet, the time between anesthetic procedures, and previous bloodwork results, this test may be very necessary. the anesthetic your vet uses may be eliminated from the body by the liver. but if the liver is not working properly, your animal cannot eliminate the anesthesia appropriately, which means your pet could die under anesthesia, recover very slowly (days). or even never recover. pre anesthetic bloodwork is meant to provide more safety for your pet.

Yes, it is. It is always a good idea to make sure that the animal is in good health before administering Anesthesia. Granted, just like with people(who also usually get blood tests before receiving Anesthesia) there is no definitive way to tell how someone or something will react to the Anesthetic. You can refuse the blood tests, but you will be taking an unnecessary risk by doing so.

It can be, yes. Some dogs' systems can't handle the anesthetics, and the blood test will tell them that. It a precaution to keep your dogs from having dangerous complications or dying on the table while they're trying to fix them.

Edit: Wonderful answer, Brandie. Thank you!

If your pet is elderly or an adult these tests are very important. Puppies and kittens aren't usually at risk. To make sure your pet is safe during aneth. do the test!!! It is well worth it if the vet finds something that could be deadly if put under anesth...

It may seem unnecessary to you, but the test is done, to reduce risk of complications. It's better to have it done, and spend a little more time and money, than cancel the test, and risk it.
