So i decided that i am going to bring her to the Police Station today, and ask an officer to speak to her about the consequences of calling 911 when there really isn't an emergency. (i.e. They can't help anyone else, because they are busy at the "prank" site.) I've gotten all positive feedback from people i told about my idea, has anyone done this and was it effective? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all your wonderful advice/replies. To the person who think cops have "better things to do", i think if more parents did what i am doing, nipping it in the bud-so to speak, then maybe the police would have more time educating kids into doing the right things in life, rather than arresting the ones out there who obviously weren't steered in the right directions by parents. Thanks again to you all! Hugs..:)

My 12yr old got caught stealing drinks out of a broken drink machine b/c she was following in another kids wake. Her uncle was a cop so he took her on a tour of the jail and had some officers talk with her.It made a world of difference. The main point we were trying to drive home was for her not to let someone else's bad idea get her in trouble.

Call the police station first and ask for an appointment to bring the child in. Yes they most likely will help you with this. If you just go in whenever you feel like they probably wont have the time, so make the appointment.
Before you go in also explain the problem with calling 911 when there is no emergency too, to your child.
The problem with calling 911 is that whenever a person dials 911, even by accident the police are required to go to that residence to make sure it really was an accidental call. In addition if you keep calling 911/ your child does, they may be able to start charging you money or your family may get into serious legal trouble if this happens repeatedly. Tell your child that. Also it is like the story of "the boy who cried wolf". If your child keeps calling 911 when there is no emergency (at home or at camp) then the police may stop quickly responding because they assume it is a prank again.
Eventually police stations charge businesses for prank 911 calls (accident or not). So if the summer camp gets charged they will sue your family for the fee and win. Also your child may get kicked out of the camp and possibly banned from ever coming back.

As to the consequenses of dialing 911 I think that sitting down and having a firm discussion with her about it would be a good way to start. If she does it again after that point I think that arranging an appointment with the police department would be a very good idea. One thing to point out is that they have to come to the site, even if you tell them that it is just a prank because of hostage type situations.

Excellent idea, our men and women in blue are busy enough with real emergencies without having to answer to prank 911 calls. Hopefully, this will help your child learn that fact.

Think twice before you do. I have heard stories like this and also parents who make kids return shoplifted items to the store...They no longer do the right thing and use it as a tool to teach the kids not to do it. Often they just arrest them on the spot when you bring them back to 'confess'.

If I were your daughter, I would ask the officer "how come you have time to talk to me when I come to the station, but not when I call you? If what you say is true, shouldn't you be helping someone else rather than chatting with my mom & me?"

Sounds like a good idea to teach the consquences of "crying wolf" -- you might want to call the station first though, and make sure someone is available to help you with your lesson

i have no children but i do have several nieces and nephews and i think you have the right idea, if more parents show the kids that they are not playing games when it comes to bad/rude behavior then we would have less people in jail .

I think that is a great idea. Instead of spanking or punishing your child you are taking a different route and will really teach your daughter a lesson worth knowing.
