Polydactylism, or extra toes, is pretty common. It's more common in some places, like New England and southeastern Canada.
It's been speculated that the gene for polydactylism arose in Quebec, and that Canadian immigrants brought their polydactyl cats down into New England. Others believe that the gene arose independently in multiple localities.
Extra toes can occur on only the front paws or on both front and rear, and the number of extra toes varies. On the front paws the extra toes may grow from the main part of the paw, forming a fan along with the normal toes, or they can grow out of the wrist, giving the appearance of a second paw (hence the term "double paws."
Technically, polydactylism is a birth defect and it's disqualifying in show cats, except for the Pixie Bob breed which is expected to be polydactyl.
Whether or not it's considered a defect, polydactylism is certainly harmless.
Many people say that polydactyl cats are good luck. That makes them more desirable to people, and that's good luck for the cats!
Polydactylism isn't limited to cats. It's comon in other species, including humans. We don't see it often in humans because the extra fingers or toes are usually amputated at birth for cosmetic reasons.

Yep... our second oldest cat named Montgomery... he has an extra toe on each of his paws... and he also had an additional claw but we had it removed because of the position it was in.. as it would have hurt him had we not (but we don't believe in de-clawing.. only had that one done)
He is part Mainecoon and part Himalayn... mostly a very, very dark grey with marbling of white and tan
