Usually have them bred when they are 2 years old. That way, any medical problems that could be passed on to the puppies would have shown up by then and you can decide if it's worth it. They are usually pregnant for 64 days, give or take a few.

First off let me applaud you "torbaynewfs"..you said it all"the only reason to breed is to better the breed"Any breeder that claims they are making a profit from breeding their dogs is either a puppy miller or back yard breeder.I've done this for 25 years and have NEVER broke even in one single year.If you do everything that is needed for your animals,no way to make a profit.Vet care is very expensive and medicines and supplys and everything figures into that cost. Then you must think of finding proper homes for these babies. Its alot more to breeding than most think.I personaly only breed when I have waiting lists that have been pre-approved and their homes checked out thouroghly. Some breeds and some dogs mature sooner than others.Never should they be bred before 2 years old b/c that gives time for genetic defects to show up that might not be detectable by prior testing. Also they need to have at least 2 heat cycles. If the female is not mature enough at 2 years old, then you should wait until she is.A female that is not mature enough will not be a good mother to the babies. And it should be a pleasent experience for you and momma dog. They can carry anywhere from 58-65 days but I have seen one particular female go 71 days.MY Lord those pups looked as if they were 4 weeks old when they were born...LOL.A nice healthy mother makes nice healthy babies.

IF you have to do it wait until she is AT LEAST one year old. She should go through at least one or 2 heat cycles. There are many unwanted puppies in the world, and breeding encourages people not to provide homes for animals that need them the most!! For your dogs health, have her spayed ASAP!!! Enjoy your wonderful dog!! IF you have her spayed before her first heat cycle her chances of getting ovarian cancers and tumors will be greatly reduced!!! The longer you let her go without being spayed the more her chances of cancer will increase!! Also younger puppies recover much quicker from surgery the younger they are!! Don't forget some dogs need a C section which can cost $400-$800. Be prepared to have your dog vaccinated ASAP by a veterinarian and if you do breed several months from now....don't forget to also have your puppies vaccinated by a vet as well, Parvo is deadly to pups. Breeding is costly and time consuming so be prepared!!
Dogs are pregnant for about 9 weeks

If you must breed.
Your dog should be at least 2 years old before breeding.

A dogs actual age at 1 human year is 7,some of the answers you've been given are totally off the wall. This is not directed at you!!

Breed at 1 yr???? That's crazy and irresponsible. Would you let your 7 yr old child have sex and get pregnant?? They are still puppies at 1 yr. What's wrong with you people?

Gestation period for dogs is 63-65 days give or take.

Here's a link to calculate your dogs actual age.

Depends on the breed. What ever age they can clear them for the genetic defects they can carry.
They are pregnant for 58-63 days.
Please get a lot of information on breeding before you do it. There are too many backyard breeders in the world producing poor quality puppies. You should not make money off your dog. The only reason to breed is to improve the breed.

Make sure she is healthy and at least had one heat cycle. I prefer to wait for two cycles. Best time to breed is the 12,14 and 16 th days into the heat cycle these are her most productive days try to hit all three for good fertilization. A good female will stick her tail to the side (flagging) and alow the male penetration. Some small breeds may need help. Never force them apart. They will get in some unique positions before they part don't worry. She is in gestation for 60 to 63 days in general but it may vary. Feed high grade puppy chow to her two weeks before expected arrival and till pups wean. I also give a vitamin. I use Dog Bloom for pregnant mothers.

If you do not know the answers to these very basic questions you should not be breeding. Take your time and learn first, and then decide if you want to breed.

DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER ANIMALS DIE!!!
For every puppy you breed and find a home for you are killing a puppy at a shelter, because that is one less home looking to adopt one.
Call a rescue group in your area and ask how many homeless puppies they have right now. A lot, guaranteed!
Please, PLEASE, please spay your dog. It is the best thing for her, and you will be helping to save lives. If you can't pay contact animal control, they have programs to help.
