You should say thank you. It was believed a long time ago when you sneeze, you blow all godliness out of you, letting the devil in,so, God Bless you is the appropriate thing to say. People get tired of saying it to me, because when I sneeze, I can go for ten times in a row!

It used to upset me when people "blessed" me after I sneezed. It's a silly superstition and it should stop. BUT! People do it for one of three reasons: they are truly wishing you good health or they're hoping the devil doesn't get you or it's simply a habit. I try to remember that and although I may not agree with their beliefs it really doesn't hurt me to say thank you in response.

However, you're not going to get a "bless you" from me when you sneeze. It's still a silly superstition.

I usually don't respond.

If you want to be ultra-polite, then you should say, "Thank you." It is an appropriately empty response to an empty phrase.

The reason "bless you" is so empty is because it becomes too commonplace. Some people say, "bless you," out of habit and not because he is actively wishing you good health after you have sneezed. And those who do say it out of legitimate concern for you won't be offended if you don't respond with empty thanks.

Thank you or excuse me.

Do you know where the saying came from? It started hundreds of years ago when Europe was having one of its plagues. If someone sneezed, people would say "bless you' to pray that they didn't have the plague or will survive the plague.

Thank you. Although, I don't say anything because I am an Atheist and I don't respond to "Bless You's".
