The answer is in JOHN 1.
God's image was what He imagined Himself to become.
The LOGOS is the thought of God expressed as His' image.
His expressed image is Jesus Christ (HEBREWS 1:3).
The LOGOS (God's thought of what He would express Himself as), was before anything else was made. It existed first. That's why Jesus could say He was the "I AM". Because the LOGOS was the idea or thought of Himself becoming flesh...which is His expressed image.
And when He made man in His own image, it was before Adam was made into flesh & blood.
The images He made us in were Spiritual images. Because it says we were IN HIM before the world was made.
Those images, or SPIRITUAL BODIES, are what we will exist in when we leave these temporal bodies. Those are our bodies made without hands. THEOPHANIES...SPOKEN WORD BODIES.
Those our are eternal bodies.
We came from God and we will go back to God.
We are not human beings having a Spiritual experience. We are Spiritual beings having a human experience.
By the way, i do not recognize the term, HOMO SAPIENS, for that would be to acknowledge MACRO EVOLUTION, which is only a theory. We are not a species of apes that evolved. For their seed cannot mix with human seed. We are distinctly different. And one species cannot change into another.
Charles Darwin observed MICRO EVOLUTION...that is, species adapting to their surroundings. They will make minor changes in order to survive. But they will never change into an entirely different species. This has never been observed (except in Hollywood), and is a claim quite preposterous.
Darwin built his theory around his observations and the entire scientific world has been fooled into believing it as truth...when it's nothing more than exagerration and supposition.
It's like beiving a fable.
The Bible and all that God has done can easily be proven (ROMANS 1:20).
It is not a fable. It's only that wicked men wish not to believe it...because then their sins are exposed.

That being is using homo sapien bodies or some other body to play the game of life. When you're outside of space and time in nowhere, what do you do there? Not much happening, not too much to do. So why not go grab a body and play? (Of course you'd first have to create a universe to play in.)

It is very simple. We are made in the image of the flesh of Jesus Christ. John 1:1-3 tells us that
he was the word,a thought or idea expressed.
While he did not exist in His fleshly state at creation, the thought and plan was already in the mind of God. John continues on to say that the Word was made flesh. This is the same Idea used when Jesus told those of his day, Before Abraham was I am. He did not exist in flesh before Abraham, but His Spirit did.
The same idea is found in Revelations 13:8 when the bible calls Jesus, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Was Jesus slain physically at the foundation of the world?
No. Jesus was slain at Calvary, but it existed in the mind of God at the foundation of the world.
So, again we are created in the Image of Jesus Christ.

We are created in the moral image of God - not the same physical image because God is a spiritual being.
As we are made in this moral image that is why we often see people who can be very cruel doing kind acts eg for friends and family: it is the residual, faint image of God still visible.
Because of the Fall our behaviour is a pale reflection of God's image but that will eventually be fully restored because of the life death and resurrection of Jesus.

Man and woman were made in the image of God with individuality, the power and freedom to think and to do. Though created free beings, each is an indivisible unity of body, mind, and spirit, dependent upon God for life and breath and all else. When our first parents disobeyed God, they denied their dependence upon Him and fell from their high position under God. The image of God in them was marred and they became subject to death. Their descendants share this fallen nature and its consequences. They are born with weaknesses and tendencies to evil. But God in Christ reconciled the world to Himself and by His Spirit restores in penitent mortals the image of their Maker. Created for the glory of God, they are called to love Him and one another, and to care for their environment. (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:7; Ps. 8:4-8; Acts 17:24-28; Gen. 3; Ps. 51:5; Rom. 5:12-17; 2 Cor. 5:19, 20; Ps. 51:10; 1 John 4:7, 8, 11, 20; Gen. 2:15.)

I believe that Jesus existed, but was sort of a Ghandi of his time. He was born, he tried to reform a society, did some good things, and then died and dissolved into the mulch/the earth.
A ressurrection exists in so many religions, so many other people were crucified in his time, and we've already established that Mary wasn't a virgin but merely a young maiden.
People come and go, leaving social marks - Jesus did his, but he was human as we all are.

Stop thinking in material terms, for starters.
The "image" of God that is us is spiritual in nature, just as He is.
It consists of:
A) being. He is infinite and eternal. We are finite and immortal, but we both BE.
B) Intelligence. He is omniscient. We can learn much. And both of us are conscious of ourselves AS a self.
C) Free will. He is omnipotent. We are not. But, He freely limits His omnipotence to allow our free will to be truly FREE.
D) He IS love. We can love. Not sentimental schmoosh, not appreciation of beauty, though He and we both share these attributes.
E) He IS justice and mercy. We can, should, and occasionally even DO, show both.
There. And not a word about bushes or tablets.

a "being" that exists beyond time and space can take any form it chooses. If you are talking about God, all of the stories you refer to were written by humans to explain to people of their time things which they did not understand. Religions were created to give power to the priest class, and included fear of an unseen being to keep the rabble in line.

like u and me. We r not made in his image we create it in our image. The formless, infinite, all powerful, existence is manifested in form as u & me, as animals, birds, rocks, everything. If ur seeking is true u will experience it. Ever heard Man proposes : God disposes, its the other way round God proposes, man disposes and that is the begining of misery.
GOD = Generator Observer (provider) Destroyer

We call God 'He' simply because it is better than calling Him 'It'.
We are made in His image in a fashion that He is a Trinity and we are also. God the Father (mind), God the Son (body) and God the Holy Ghost (spirit). Just as God has three components, so do we (mind, body and spirit). The image is not literal.
