I have seen churches in places that were suffering from damaging environmental problems, yet it seems like they only speak out in matters related to abortion. Do you think Christians see that Jesus is coming soon, that way they don't really care to speak up on things like pollution since the earth will be re-made when he comes?

Yes churches should be more outspoken in community environmental problems. The federal government cannot always be relied on to solve local problems. Helping to resolve environmental issues needs to be an effort of private citizens, local businesses, municipalities, non-profits, and the religious community (Christian as well as other faiths).
The Catholic Church does support Environmental Justice and Stewardship of the land. The late Pope John Paul II wrote a piece called "The Ecological Conversion" and various denominations/faiths also support these principles. I do agree that abortion is the most common issue that churches address publicly and hopefully other issues will be covered as extensively in the near future.

Damaging environmental problems are not the church's responsibility. But, if the minister, priest, or lay citizens want to get involved and do something about it, the church is the obvious first place to start.
There are environmental problems everywhere, That is a given. What we need to do is get citizens involved and open to doing something and then calling up the minister and ask him if we could meet and discuss our plans to improve the environment by meeting in his church.
Other than that, it isn't the jurisdiction of a church to do any more than that.
When you get politics in the pulpit and the pulpit in state legislatures, nothing gets done.

I think church is being abused and used as a secondary form of government these days, churches should focus on helping people with their spiritual lives, and leave environmental issues to city/state/federal government. Preaching about jesus doesn't make you an expert on the environment. People need to vote more, and get off their knees...

I don't think there's a legitimate church on the planet. Whatever is out there is the creation of a diametrically opposed system. It's pretty obvious, too.

church isn't supposed to take up government issues ... it would be so much better if churches stuck to preaching the word to the people who want to hear it. let government handle government issues and let church handle church issues.
that's why there is such a thing as "seperation of church and state" in america ... though the church folk ignore it, pushing for prayer in schools and whatnot.

It would be great for churches to be more active and not just single idea places. They could be more relevant in society.
