I was afraid he was bitten by a snake or stung by a wasp. His ENTIRE head was swollen, not just one area, and there weren't any obvious areas he was bitten or stung. A benadryl and few hours later he was fine. Any ideas what it oculd have been?

Maybe he had got into something and was allergic to it....I think if the swelling went down just watch him closely a few days and if he doesn't start acting funny then he's fine.

Oh, I've seen this happen twice to my own dogs. Both times, it was because of a bee sting. My poor male Boston got it right on the cheek. His face blew up like a balloon before I could even get the the medicine closet. (Yes, I have a whole closet... Three kids and four dogs make for a large first-aid kit...*heh*) The poor guy. He looked so miserable. You did the right thing by giving him benadryl. The dosage my vet told me to give was 1 mg per pound of dog, and it worked like a charm.

Now, my female Boston hunts bugs, just like they were rodents. Even under very close supervision, she got ahold of a bee one time and it stung her right in the mouth. She puffed up, and her body was covered in hives. Then, to my horror, even after the Benadryl, her breathing became labored. I rushed her to the vet for a stronger shot. Later that day, we had to take her again. I was up with her all that night, making sure she was okay. She has an obvious nasty allergy to stings, so now we don't allow her to chase bugs outside at all. Hard to stop an obsession like that, but that was too close for me.

Best wishes!

this happened to my friend's dog. She was bitten by a wasp or a bee and turned out she was allergic. Sounds like an allergic reaction and if the benadryl worked then it most definately was

It was an alergic reaction. Could be stung, could be spider bite, could also be a food alergy. Keep the benadryl on hand and try and remember what he was doing before his head swelled. Was he in the woods? Lying on the lawn? Eating out of the garbage. Keep an eye on him. Good luck

A bite or a allergic reaction to something the only way to know if it happens again is to take it to the vet.

sounds like an allergic reaction to somthing. Try to figure out if he ate anthing strange. Also call your vet and ask if he or she can test for allergies.
glad he is OK now!
