I had the same problem in college. I found that local ordinances and laws play the biggest role in whether or not to serve beer in pitchers. Some towns or counties don't allow pitchers at all, some only allow them if you're sitting at a table rather than at the bar. Most won't allow a single person to order a pitcher unless they are sharing it with at least one other person. These are all designed to keep people from getting drunk in public, which doesn't really work all that well.

The other factor involved is the establishment's ability to make money. If you charge $5 for a pint of beer, and $12 for a pitcher which holds 4 pints, it becomes pretty obvious that you could make a lot more money if you didn't sell pitchers at all.

When I tended bar we were not allowed to serve a picture to one person. It had to be a least 2 or more people. It is an old law to keep people from drinking to much in one sitting.

Liability reasons for serving too much! Once you sell the pitcher, you can no longer moniter the behavior to see if they have become intoxicated. Also.......the damn beer gets hot if you don't drink fast enough.
