I watched a documentary last night on some "no kill "shelters that have animals stuck in cages for years. Eventually the dogs go crazy. It just made me sad , so I wanted some opinions

Yes, I am in favor of no kill shelters, but we need to get to the root of the problem, which is to educate kids in school from first grade thru 12th to spay and neuter thier pets, and the shelters won't be crammed full, and no animals will have to go thru this trauma. How sad, to have to die because there is no home for you. My hair dresser just adopted a dog from a shelter that was in a pen for 2 yrs., he was so sad at first and scared of everything, but now, 3 weeks later, he is a happy loving pooch. Please educate everyone that you know, to not let animals be born, just to die. Thankyou.

none of us want to see animals suffer, but animal shelters should put dogs down humanely after a reasonable amount of time of trying to find the owners or re homing its preferable to dogs being stuck in cages until they give up, that's torture. Until people start acting like the smarter species and act responsibly with there pets, there are always going to be hard decisions to be made by people who do care for animals

It's hard to say.. I think animals shouldn't be put to sleep just because a shelter is full, but the conditions they keep the animals in needs to be improved too. I recently went to one that was no kill and they lectured me on how wrong it is to declaw a cat, but the place was overcrowded and filthy and they turned away some tiny little kittens someone had brought in because they had no room. So instead of getting put to sleep they probably end up on the streets with no one to care for them. It's a difficult situation.

It really depends on how hard they're trying to get animals adopted out....things like fuzzy friends is a no kill shelter and they get rid of animals fast....I want to have my own animal rescue on my 50 acres soon....and I will have runs for the dogs so they aren't stuck in a little cage all night...but they will have to go in the kennel at night to sleep and all....I also want to have a stable for rescued livestock and horses.

I would prefer to see the dogs kept in foster homes with families, and many places will do that. And the shelters that I have been to do need a bit of "fixing up". That's why they need the donations, yes. The dogs need exercise areas in which to run and play. They need interaction, and so much more than just sitting there in cages. Their mental health needs to be cared for just as much as their physical health.

I would rather keep them in the shelters being that their is a chance that someone will adopt them. I cant stand the thought of knowing that so many animals are getting put to death. Yeah it is really sad but at least in the shelters their is that chance of finding a happy home with someone who will really love them and care for them.

I agree that the best course of action is to educate people on responsible pet ownership. Unfortunately sometimes animals should be put down for a variety of reasons. It is sad but overall better for both humans and animals that they are pts rather than roaming the streets.

Some no kill shelters are ok, some like that are bad, I rather not see any animal hurt

Unfortunately you are right... sometimes the misery isn't worth the price... and a 'no kill' home for animals can cause more suffering than it prevents.

Now... in the case of Nursing Homes.... well.!!!

Yes I am, and I actually got my pup from one. Why buy a puppy when you can save a life instead?!?
Only problem I can see is over crowding and stuff like that.
