Lack of air to the brain. Yes it is contagious. Your brain registers someone else yawning and decides to "double check" that it has enough air as well so it triggers a yawn.

Yawning is the body's physiological response to increase the amount of oxygen getting into your system...it is contageous in a sense cause your eyes can send a message to your brain to tell you to breath a little bit more...
