My shop cat, whom I love very much came to us a year ago, that is about the extent of experience I have had with cats. He seems 'sick' like a human would look if they had the flu. Is this normal? I have never seen or heard of a cat being just 'sick'. I called the vets and they said all they could do is run blood tests. Should I worry enough to get the tests or is it fairly normal for a cat to be under the weather?

You should watch your cat closely and follow your instincts. If she stays as she is or gets better in a few days you're probably ok....if she worsens within a couple days, take her to the vet if you want to keep her around. However within a week if she is sicker, you should put her down. It is the humane thing to do. Just be patient and observant, cats do catch little colds from time to time.

First of all, you should listen to your veterinarian. Obviously, she knows the best. If it's a viral infection your cat's immune system will deal with it, and she'll get better in a few days. If there's a secondary bacterial infection, your vet will give you medication. In most cases, FIV and/or Feline Leukemia won't make your cat sick like that unless their is an underlying primary infection. It's a good idea to test your kitty, but it won't make any difference. No need to "humanly" put her down if she's the only kitty in the household, she would have a shorter lifespan, that's all. Anyways, no worries! Cats have strong bodies. But...if the flu signs worsen and she doesn't get better in a few days, make an appointment with a veterinarian. Good Luck!

If it is a really old cat ( 7 and Up) run the blood work . Cats get alot of problems when they get older. If the cat is youger that 7 and you already did a leukimia and FIV test then take it in just for an exam and see what the vet has to say.

cats do share many of the same illnesses as humans.

It is not normal for your cat to be ill. If you love your pet, you need to get your cat to the vet as soon as possible, so they can run tests to determine what type of illness your kitty has. Don't delay.

I must warn you some of these tests can be expensive. But ask your vet if he/she would be willing to work with you in regards to the bill.

A healthy cat will walk around with his/her tail up in the air like a little antenna. If your cat is literally dragging it's tale, then it's a sick cat.

I have lost 2 cats for Feline Leukemia and both of them LOOKED like a sick cat.

What you do depends on how much money you are willing to spend on the little critter. If it is, indeed, sick... then do the only humane thing and have it put down.

has your cat been tested for FIV and leukemia because my cat was sick and i couldnt figure out why and when i took him to the vet they told me that he had those two. when he was sick he would hide a lot and when it came to having to putting him down he was vomiting and he stopped eating, i dont know if your cat is all of that put it is better to find out sooner than later.

if you figure out that he does have one of those i would become very informative on what you can do to help him no be in so much pain

that happened to my cat once and the doctor found his temp was a little high and you could see that his pink nose was white and not pink (the white nose was why I took him in, and the listlessness) .... doctor said that he thot it was just a virus like a cat flu like you said and he gave him some antibiotics...said if doesnt get better bring him back...no tests, none of that...good vet... he snapped out of it really quick... 10 years or so later and he is still fine...

take him in...he may be running a fever...

Pets do get sick like humans do. I would take it to the vet and have the test done, especially to rule out FLK, feline luekemia, he may have been exposed. Hopefully its just a cold and cats rebound quickly. But get the test done to rule diseases out.

If it is a shop cat, look around .dogs and cats love the taste of anti-freeze, make sure there is none where they can get into it....it is bad fir them and just a little will do alot of damage. try and give lots of fresh water

If his nose is runny and stuff and his eyes look gunky he probably has upper respiratory infection, my kitten had it. They ran tests to see if he had anything else and he was perfectly normal other than that, its common for kittens to get and sometimes it goes away on its own (when they're kittens) but my cat got medication which I had to give to him once a day for probably about 2 weeks. It went away and he's perfect now.
