About 10 days, hopefully a bit less.
He can't help it, as he is driven by her pheromones. (scent of sex hormones that tell him its time to mate)
It is a drive much stronger than obedience, or even eating.
You can help them both get throught this with chamomile Tea, to sooth them.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for him. dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before he needs to relax. It will keep him happy, but reduce stress.
If your grocer doesn't carry chamomlile, you can use 'Sleeptime Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.
Please don't yell and scold, as they REALLY can't help this response, and they are as miserable as they make you.

Here are the different phases of the heat cycle to let you know what is coming up next...
Several major phases compose the heat cycle. Variations in the level of normal circulating hormones contribute to these different phases.
Proestrus – the period that precedes estrus, when males are attracted to non-receptive females. Proestrus generally lasts for approximately nine days.
Estrus – the period of breeding lasting approximately five to nine days; together with proestrus in known as the time of being “in heat”.
Diestrus – the period following mating. Diestrus lasts approximately 56 to 58 days in the pregnant female, and 60 to 100 days in the non-pregnant female.
Anestrus – the period of reproductive quiescence. The female has no attraction to or from the male. Anestrus generally lasts four to five months.

When a chihuahua is on her "period" that means she is in heat, so he naturally wants to hump her. Even though it is unlikely he will "gain entry", you better keep them separate because if your chihuahua ends up pregnant from a larger dog, she is likely going to have issues delivering because they will be too big. $1000 + at the vet.

Just to be on the safe side, when my females are in heat, I keep them away from the males for 20 days. Longer than needed, I suppose, but better than the alternative.
(Even when it is time to breed my Bossie female, I keep her away from the males until the exact days I want her to be bred. And then, she's only with the male for long enough for the deed to happen.)

Your chihuahua is in heat! It can last up to a month? Be careful of any male dogs that could come in contact with her! they all will be interested. however, any large dogs could hurt her, and she could die trying to have too large of puppies! If you don't want to breed her, you should consider fixing her. It's healthier to have done before she's alot older. Cancer is much more of a danger with them before they're fixed! Hope this helps!

The chihuahua is in heat and it is his natural response to try to mount her. Her heat cycle should only last about 7 days. Her heat cycle is aobut the same as a human females cycle

about a couple of weeks then things will settle down. And male dogs' bowels will move sometimes when a female's in heat near them. Don't know why but they do.

Sounds like your little girl is on heat, and her scent is attracting your pitbull to her. It'll be over soon enough when done, your Pitbull will calm down too.

They are in heat for 3 weeks. Please make sure that the pit cannot get to her. He is too big to actually do anything, but he may hurt her or kill her trying.
