My husband used to be able to drink beer, and really enjoyed it. A couple of years ago, he would sometimes get extremely hot and flushed after drinking certain beers. Now, it has progressed to where he can't drink any type of beer without SEVERE heartburn/reflux. Could this be an allergic reaction? To what, exactly? Can we treat it?

Thanks!
Becky

You can be allergic to beer because they store the barley, hops, etc. in silos...there can be mold that grows on them...you can be allergic to that...another aspect...biochemically...there is a pathway that makes acetaldehyde...basically MOST people have 2 enzymes, some asian people only contain 1 enzyme to get rid of the alcohol...this enzyme breaks down the poisonous acetaldehyde to something that the body can get rid off...that's why you can feel sick or drink half a beer and already feel buzzed. Basically, drinking is sort of like a controlled self-poisoning but your liver will detox it for you to a point since it has a lot of ability to regenerate...once the liver gets damaged, you get cirrhosis and basically your liver can't "filter" out the impurities produced by everyday living and eating, drugs...so you die...maybe this is too detailed, but its medicine.

Could be the sulfites in the beer. Funny thing is It never bothered me then all of a sudden I would get sever headachs from beer. After a yr or two I tried it again and can drink most beers now. Some still affect me but most dont. I also had the same problem with wine. It seems that after stoping my drinking for a yr or two i was able to drink again

It's possible to be allergic to anything but chances are he's allergic to an ingredient in the beer. Does he have a problem with wheat? malt? hops, which is some kind of grain? The best way to treat it is to stop drinking it and stay away from anything else that contains the same products.

Absolutely. There are many ingredients in beer that could cause an allergic reaction. I have a friend who is allergic to gluten. Which is found in Wheat , Barley and Rye. The main ingredients in beer.

Could be a reaction to the types of hops used.
I myself get a severe headache after just one Budweiser.
Other beer manufacturers don't have the same effect.

See Becky, I told you it is possible! LOL
I don't have any issues with wines or even malt drinks. If he doesn't have mold allergies or has never had hops alone, it is probably the hops (like mine) that is causing the reaction. Your stomach can and will reflux anything that is disagreeing with it.
Good luck,
Cin

have him switch to wine. it's much healthier and made from very different ingredients. beer is high in calories and gives you a 'beer belly'. heartburn is always a sign of an unhealthy diet. he should see this as his body trying to tell him to stop doing something unhealthy. besides, american beers are brewed with pigs blood, to speed up the brewing process. if he drinks the typical beers: coors, miller, bud, etc., it's no wonder it's making him sick.

I have heard of hops allergy. Hops is a plant used in beer production. If wine doesn't affect him I might investigate and test hops.
