English is quickly becoming one of the most used languages in the world, having overtaken French's popularity for official languages, and coming quick on the heels of Spanish as the most widely used international language. English is one of two official languages of the United Nations, as well as for Olympic competition (the other is French). Amongst those organizations whose interactions regularly span across several countries or even continents, Engish is becoming more and more the standard of communication. Within countries where Engish is listed as the official language, the percentage of the population that is fluent in another language is suprisingly low compared to those countries where English is not an official language. I guess those of us that already speak English can't be bothered to learn anything else, when everyone else is just learning English anyway.

English has always been the recognised language of the United States because of our founding by England, but in general, since the USA is the largest user of goods and services in the world and the leaders in business, English has become the recognised language of business and that is why other countries try to learn it.

English is spoken all over the world. Why not learn English? English is my first language, but I can also speak Spanish and French. It is always good to know more than one language. I would like to learn more.

Because that was the decision of our forefathers and the MOST POPULAR decision in this country still. The other nationalities are still very much in the minority if you take the country as a whole. Tell you what if I move to Mexico, I'll learn Mexican, If I move to Germany, I'll learn German. People who come here to live should learn the prevailing language of the land.. and here it's English.

You don't have to learn anything you don't want to. But, in saying that, depending in where you live, learning the language of that country is the only appropriate thing to do. In Germany learn german, United States learn english etc.

Because the proper way to ask the question is, "Why must everyone learn English?"

If I moved to Mexico I would feel that I need to learn Spanish in order to communicate with the citizens of Mexico. I don't expect them to learn English just to communicate with me. English is our language here. In order to get along and enjoy this country,it would be best if you learned our language.
