The answer is language. In the phrase the English Language "the" is the first word, "English" is the second, and "language" is the third word.

The answer is language.
It is the third word of "the English language". The question needs to be spoken, otherwise the quotation marks give away the trick.

I was once inclined to leap at the 'air' bandwagon if I would have discovered the way it turns pancakes brown or might make me explode if I checked out it.
