Phobias are not always rooted in bad experiences. Many have no definable reasons at all. Wikipedia says: In discussions of causes of coulrophobia, sufferers seem to agree that the most fear-inducing aspect of clowns is the heavy makeup which, accompanied by the bulbous nose and weird color of hair, completely conceals the wearer's identity. Clowns also often appear in horror movies, but unlike the phobia, the intention here is usually to frighten viewers by letting the horrific take the disguise of something normally associated with fun and happiness.
That is under causes of the fear. That is about as close as you can get and it is usually rooted deep in the subconscious. Nothing bad had to happen to you, it is just a matter of how you conceptualize in your subconscious. It is treatable by the way. Hope I helped.

maybe you were a tiny tot still in a crib when either a clown scared you...or maybe it wasn't a clown but some elderly woman in heavy makeup peering into your crib. In the mind of a tiny child...you could have been reminded of this person when first you saw a clown...so you transferred the image to the clown. I would face the fear down with logic. I mean looking at a clown might be ugly or disconcerting but it sure won't harm you or kill you or anything like that. You're stronger than the image. Remember that. And find out who was the old bag with heavy makeup peering her face way inside your crib when you were a baby. That's probably your culprit.

I think all the horror movies involving clowns might have something to do with it. Clowns in general aren't scary for me but they still kind of make we want to hit them (because they're stupid) Hey if I were more proned to being afraid then I'd fear someone in 10x a mimes makeup too. It's just something you naturally overcome pursuade youself that you don't need to be afraid and that no harm will come to you around these foolish looking people. They were meant to make people laugh not cry.

You have a fear of clowns because (you may not actually think this but it may be in your subconscious) even though you never had a bad experience with one you subconsciously think that they hide behind all that make up and you wonder what do they have to hide? That's why your fear of them depends on the amount of make up they have. The less make up they have the easier it is to see their face and therefore see their character or see that they aren't hiding behind a mask a make up.
I hope that helped.

There's alot of people that are afraid of clowns, because of how they look. The bagginess of the clothes, the makeup, the shoes, sometimes everything, also people don't like them because they invade your personal space. It's a pretty common fear, don't worry about it to much. On the brighter side, at least you're not one of those people on Maury that's scared of cotton balls or pickles.

You didn't happen to watch the movie IT when you were little, did you? My older siblings watched that when they babysat me and since then I've had a fear of clowns. Other than that, I know a lot of people who have phobias of clowns with no obvious reason, so you're not alone.

I do not know. Why are people afraid of various different things - they just are. And yes, many people do have a fear of clowns oddly enough. For me, I am afraid of needles, getting a shot is not a good thing!

my brother is the same way... 36 yrs old with no bad clown experiences... but he HATES them and kinda freaks out when they come near him.
maybe its the makeup and outfits they wear make them appear distorted and out of proportion with normal people... they are kinda creepy
