Hi; Homemade invites are very much ok, just try to take the time to create a design and a plan to follow through; I make handmade invitations as a side business, and they come out a million times more beautiful and unique than the impersonal, mass-printed invitations you'll find from most wedding stores. Try going to your local craft store and check out the cardstock papers (this is really the priciest item to make the invites), and make sure you can print on them with the type of printed you own. The trick is to try and sketch your invitation, and then make a sample to replicate however many guests you'll be handing them out to. Do give yourselves time to do them, since trying to rush through will cause you to make them bad, and waste materials. Keep in mind that you should be sending the invites out to your guests approximately 1-2 months before the event, and keep in mind mailing time.
I hopes this helps!
Best of luck!!

Usually homemade invitations look best when they're made on the computer with some nice paper, but if she wants to be creative and make her own with construction paper and stuff that's great! I love unique invites. Just make sure that the level of formality of the wedding matches the formality of the invitations. If she's having a traditional, formal wedding with a nice dinner reception, the glitter might not give off the right idea. People won't know what to expect or dress for.

I think homemade are ok, but I would skip the construction paper and glitter. That sounds kind of childish and some might not take the wedding seriously. Try a computer program to make them at home. If she wants them to be unique and creative them maybe try putting wedding confetti in the envelope or I've even seen people use a really nice 4x6 photo of then couple and print the invite info on the back of it. Just dont do the construction paper thing. PLEASE!

Construction paper? Glue? Glitter? How old is your future sister-in-law? Invitations done on a computer can look very professional and at the same time save money - But I agree with previous post - you are setting the tone of the wedding - a very classy printed invitation says you are having a very classic style wedding - etc. What a construction paper/glue/glitter invitation would tell me - is that it will be a very childish and cheap affair. - no matter how creative they are done. Weddings are (supposed to be) a once in a lifetime event. Save the construction paper invites for a child's birthday party!

It sounds like your future sister-in-law is really creative. That's great. After the reception and the wedding attire, invitations tend to be the next biggest expense for a wedding. If you can save on that, it will help your budget immensely and homemade with construction paper and glitter sounds really wonderful.

I bought a kit to make invitations at Staples that wasn't very expensive and they were lovely. I printed them out on the computer and no one even knew they were done by me. I don't think that construction paper, glue and glitter would be appropriate for a wedding, no matter how frugal or casual the wedding may be.
I wore a gown and my husband an expensive suit, but the wedding was set at a local park on a beautiful spring day so it was rather casual.
I vote no on the construction paper and try to find that kit, ok?

I also make handmade cards, and they are beautiful. There is a whole underground movement of people who do this as a hobby - mostly with rubber stamps. I have seen beautiful samples of handmade invitations... from weddings to showers and they are all very classy. (There are also several people who do this for a living and make pretty good money!)
If your sister in law is looking for some ideas, have her check out the Splitcoaststampers website. This is a site that has over a thousand 'stampers' who make their own cards, crafts, etc. There will surely be a several samples in the gallery that she could get ideas from.
I have also attached an article from the DIY (Do it Yourself) network on how to make a handmade wedding invitation.

According to the ultimate authority, Miss Manners (aka Judith Martin), a handwritten or otherwise home made and personal invitation is even MORE correct that the mass produced commercially procured type. So called "engraved" invitations came into being as a shoddy substitute for the "proper" handwritten sort.

yes, they'll be lovely. the bride can do whatever she wants.... however she should understand that the invitation sets the tone for the event so casual invites=casual wedding. If she's having a more formal or black tie type wedding she would want the printed ones.
