At the time the term was adopted, in the 1970s, homosexuality was considered to be an emotional disorder, similar in scope to attachment disorder, with slightly different symptoms. The biggest difference being a preference for homosexual romantic relationships.
Because it was viewed as the result of grave emotional harm, it wasn't exactly viewed as a good, healthy, or happy thing, but as a symptom of serious pain that needed to be healed. As part of teaching people to accept homosexuality as equal to heterosexuality, homosexual people adopted the term "gay" to describe their orientation, because it gave the connotation of being happy. Ironically, we tend to use the term "gay" to describe things in a negative manner since it now relates to homosexuality.

It's a propagandistic distortion of the English language. Any group COULD HAVE done this BEFORE the homosexuals did it. But no group, prior to the homosexuals, were willing to inflict corruption upon the language itself. When you think about it in those moral terms, you can see what ruthlessly nasty people homosexuals must really be.

gay was also a term for happy. I think(dunno for sure) that people back then thought of Homosexuals as Happy People...not just in the since that they smile but that they like to have sex.

People came up with it because... they were happy.
Gay means happy. Same as "fairy"
It is just a stupid way for Americans to say homosexual. Alot of people are afraid. They mostly say it to fit in. I think it is stupid to call people any names. People are people.
What do you expect? There are alot of raciest and predigest people out there. So they make up stupid names for people they don't know anything about.

they needed a peppy nick name... they prefer it to being called homosexual.. which has always had a negative connotation as having meant sexually deviant and mentally disturbed, while the world "gay" has always had a more positive connotation since it meant = merry/happy / carefree/ bright colors...you can understand why it would be preferred
