The listerine idea sounds interesting.
Vicks vaporub is also suggested as a natural remedy. (all the prescription drugs have not worked for my toenail infection of the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes). treat the nails twice a day, every day. For about a year. That long because new nail has to grow out and the old nail be eventually all cut away. Otherwise the old nail will reinfect the new nail.

Lamisil does take a long time to work, because you need to grow out new nails. Go to a pharmacy and ask for Fungoid Tincture (miconazole nitrate 2%, a topical antifungal). It costs about $35 for a 1oz bottle, but will last for over 6 months. You paint it on like nail polish once a day, and any nail fungus will turn brown. Don't use any real nail polish to cover it up. Also, this stuff's poisonous, so don't use it around food. It's been around a long time--because it works. It'll allow the Lamisil to do its job while helping to keep the fungus from recurring.

If you are in to natural remidies, one of the many properties of Garlic (the wonder food) is that it is anti-fungal (it kills fungus). Since not too many people do very much real garlic, try Garlinase as it is potent but still not too noticable in odor. If you are worried about the odor and are single, try taking it before bedtime. It will also take a while to kill the fungus (whatever you use) so give it time.

I know this sounds crazy but I was told to use straight Listerine and soak the nails twice a day until its gone. It worked for the nail I had a problem with.
