My husband and I have 2 children and have decided that is enough. He has said that he will have a vasectomy, but he is scared. How long does it take to heal after the procedure? And, if he decides that he doesn't want to do it, how long does it take to heal after a female tubal litigation?

My mother had a tubal ligation and my ex-husband had a vasectomy.

A tubal ligation requires what is considered to be a major surgical procedure. As far as I know, it requires general anesthesia or at least significant anesthesia. It requires clamping or tying the fallopian tubes. There is a significant recovery time (by comparison) of a week.

A vasectomy is when the Vas Deferen (there are 2) are cut to prevent sperm from being able to flow from the testes out the penis during sex. The sperm is instead reabsorbed into the body (something that happens anyways with unused sperm). It is an outpatient procedure with local anesthetic. A small (approx 1/2 inch) incision in made in the scrotum. Both tubes are accessible through this incision. The tubes are cut and generally tied or cauterized. It takes about 2 stiches to close. They say there will be some soreness at the incision site for a couple days but with my ex it lasted only that night. He just put some ice on the area and was fine. You can begin having sex almost immediately. We did within 48 hours. (However you have to use alternative forms of Birth Control for the first couple times you have sex until it is sure that any sperm already past the point of incision has been expelled.)

My ex said there was no difference after the procedure to how he felt physically or to his sex drive. It worked wonderfully. We choose it because it was much less invasive then the Tubal ligation and less expensive and had a shorter recovery time. The Vas Deferen is much easier to get to surgically than the fallopian tubes.

You can search both on the yahoo for added information. Also see an urologist and a Gynecologist.

it's easier for a man to have a vasectomy done and heals alot faster than a if a woman has a tubal. a tubal is a major surgery but a vasectomy is done in the docs office and they can go home and be back to normal the next day. most men don't want to have a vasectomy because i guess it has something to to with their machoism. i had a tubal done after my 2nd son was born because my husband was afraid to have a vasectomy. you can look up info and compare on the net.

My husband and I went through this same thing.

We have friends who had gotten a Vasectomy told my husband horr stories of having lots of pain and swelling even years later and having their scrotum turn black so we made sure we asked tons of people about their experiences.

I asked tons of women online and some friends with tubals and heard the only issues from them were minor infections at the site of the inscisions and a few reported change in their cycles, but none of the women regretted their descision like the men had.

We finally chose to have a tubal because the incidence of the tubes reconnecting after the proceedure was far lower than with a vasecomy. And we know we're all done.

We are very happy with our choice. Believe it or not, I was actually more sore from the anesthesia side effects than from the operation itself. I rested about two days and was a bit achey, but I was up and running pretty much the next day. It was fast and left barely any scars... they're so invisible that I had to point them out to my sister and she had a hard time seeing where I was talking about.

In our rationale, we thought it made much more sense for me to reabsorb a single cell each month than to have him reabsorb millions of sperm each day.

Good luck with your choice!

A few days for a vasectomy. A vasecetomy is a lot safer than a tubal.

Dont do either. The serious best BEST BEST most effective medicine / prodcedure is an IUD or IUC. Try Mirena. Ask your doctor about it. It sits in a woman's uterus and the IUC, approved in 2001 in the US, is the #1 birth control in the world. You dont have to take pills and it lasts for 5 years. Some IUDs last for 10 years. It is 100% reversible, meaning you can just have it taken out if you want to have kids later and is more effective than a vasectomy and having tubes tied. Safer and more effective. So talk to your OBGYN about Mirena or another approved IUD/IUC first before considering surgery.

It is way easier for a guy to get fixed then a woman. They get theirs done in the office in 20 min. where as we have to have surgery and recovery is like 2 weeks. And tubes can come untied for us where as mens are pretty much 100%. I have known several woman who have gotten preggers after a tubal but no guys who knocked someone up after they got fixed

His is an outpatient surgery. He'll feel tender for about a week or so. Tubal ligation on the other hand is major surgery and it will take you a lot longer to recover.
