well, i attended a hawaiiana/tiki wedding and everone wore aloha wear (preferable vintage), and the wedding cake toppers were the little menehune leprachan people from hawaii folk lore. the toasting glasses were vintage tiki mugs. and the favors were cute little bottles of rum placed in tiki mug shot glasses. the drinking was fabulous!

have you thought about a themed wedding??

masqurade ball
Cowboy
Luau
Mexican Fiesta

anything you would do to throw a party you can do as a non-traditional wedding. your invitations can reflect that and the attire you choose to wear (and your wedding party's attire too) can all reflect your choice... once you choose a theme you can do decorations, flowers, food and favors to match!
have fun and don't let people discourage you!

If you want to be non-traditional, try to incorporate some of your and your fiance's hobbies or personality traits into your wedding. Make your wedding a reflection of you, instead of some cookie cutter wedding.
