Ok, I know this sounds wierd, but if I hadn't seen it, I would have never believed it. My neighbor was having a trench dug to install piping. When the contractors came out, the nieghbor said, "Due to last night's phase of the moon, you will not be able to fill the hole/trench." This applied to the trench and the hole that was dug.

Everyone grinned and went to work. However, when the contractors tried to fill the hole with the dirt they removed, they could not. In addition, they had to bring dirt to the site to fill up the hole.

So, have any of you ever heard this? And why was the amount of dirt removed not able to fill the hole and trench that were dug.

Your neighbor is such a joker! Hah, Hah, Hah! He pulled a fast one. He took some dirt away himself.

Either that or the UFO's that landed took the dirt.

This is very true I was raised on a farm and I dug plenty of post holes for our cattle fence when I was a kid I noticed sometimes I would have a lot of dirt left over and other times there would be none even though now a fence post was in the hole and my father told me it was because of the lunar cycle, dirt was left when waxing none when waning,I've seen this hundreds of times if don't believe me try it yourself if you know how to use digging implements. Were they tamping (compacting) the dirt back into the hole?

Depending on the type of dirt and moisture content it is often possible to dig a hole put in a post and pack all the dirt plus some more in around the post.
Frost heaving and worms and grubs keep the ground loosened up a bit normally so when you pack it back in the hole you push most of the air space out and it takes up less space.

The moon comment is just a distraction to get you thinking in the wrong direction so that the neighbor comes out looking like he knows something you do not.

Sounds like your neighbor needed some dirt or "fill" as we call it in construction, so he tricked the contractor into replacing it for free.

No, the moon has nothing to do with trenching and backfilling.

If anything, usually because of the fluff in soil as it is excavated and the addition of piping, there appears to be more dirt than originally pulled out.

Be very careful when your neighbor offers to sell you some valuable property in Florida!
