Ramadan

(rämädän´, răm´´dän´) , in Islam, the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which all Muslims must fast during the daylight hours. Indulgence of any sort is forbidden during the fast. There are only a few who are exempt, e.g., soldiers, the sick, and the young. Because of the purely lunar calendar, Ramadan falls in different seasons. The final day of Ramadan, Id al-Fitr, is celebrated by a day of feasting. The first revelation of the Qur'an is commemorated in this month

Hmmm... actually, Ramadan is one of the twelve months in the Islamic calendar (which is lunar, by the way.) It's the 9th month, and it's the same month that the Holy Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) 14oo years ago.

During this month, Muslims fast during the day - from sunrise to sunset. They abstain from food, drink, relations with their spouses, any sin that they may constantly practice during the year, and other excessive things they do in their regular routines. Basically, it's a spiritual training period. If they can abstain from that which is lawful to them in regular days for this amount of time (like food, drink, relations with their spouses,) then they can abstain from the bad too! And if they can abstain from the bad during this time, it helps them really get rid of some of their major sins!

Not only that, it's good for the health - it's good for a person spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally (and possibly financially too!) :)

And of course, it is one of the pillars of the Islamic religion for a Muslim to fast during the month of Ramadan. : ) It is obeying our Creator and Lord, Allah and that is our purpose in life. :)

Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims the world over. Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk for the duration of Ramadan. For some, fasting may appear as a form of deprivation and of bodily exertion. On one level, abstaining from sensual needs and pleasures is indeed a physical experience. But those who stop at the physical aspects of fasting miss the essence of Ramadan and its purpose.

Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. These are the foundation upon which the entire structure of Islam is built. These consist of the declaration of faith, prayer, fasting Ramadan, paying of Zakah [the annual charity payment], and performing the pilgrimage to Makkah, known as hajj. Three of the five pilars of Islam are rituals, that is, prescribed religious acts whose rationale is not immediately available for understanding. These are prayer, fasting, and hajj. Muslims are required to do them because they are part of their religious duties, that is, they are part of their covenant with God....
